Why are my photos disappearing when I save the draft of my post?

  1. I'm writing a post, inserting pictures with no problems, but as soon as I save the draft the pictures vanish. Never had any problems with this before, is there something wrong with the site today?

  2. Are you uploading them directly to WOrdpress? And are they showing in your Media Library?

  3. Yes and yes/no. I'm uploading them exactly as normal, they show on the draft and on the preview, but when I save the draft - or publish, as I just did to see what happened - the photos vanish. One of the photos I uploaded from my computer and shows in the library, the other two are from photobucket and don't.

I can't understand why this has happened all of a sudden - never had any problems before and nothing has changed at my end! Any advice?

  4. Ah, interestingly I just logged out and in again and the photos have appeared in the published post. Still not sure why it happened though?

  5. ...and they're gone again when I try to edit the post. This is driving me crazy...

  6. Actually, the photo at the top of your blog is from Photobucket, not uploaded to WordPress, and it took a minute for it to show up. Perhaps the issue is with Photobucket.

  7. But the third one is from WordPress and that is having the same problems as the rest :)

  8. Aha. I encountered the identical problems on Monday and yesterday. This is UK time and the problems started on my Monday evening, when I was writing the Tuesday entry. Photos appeared while writing the blog and seemed to save correctly in draft. When I went to preview, they only sometimes showed, but then whimsically disappeared altogether. Going 'live', they vanished.

After several hours of trial and error, I managed (by mid-morning) to get just one of the intended three to 'hold' in the post.

I thought it was just me, but it clearly isn't.

  9. I've may just have found a temporary work-around. The problem appears to be only in saving the post. If you load and fire, for immediate publication, the photos seem to render properly - on a sample universe of precisely ... one.

I have been used to writing complete posts for scheduled publication early the following morning. So, for the time being, I'll write the text and only insert photos the next day, whenever I get the time to do it.

  10. I tried that - it worked on the second attempt. I haven't had a chance to try posting anything else yet, I'm hoping whatever bug was in the system has sorted itself out! Sort of pleased it wasn't just me though...is that bad?! Glad you've found a temporary solution anyway.

This has been happening to me for a few days as well. Like @silverblackbird, I'm happy it's not just me, but it is pretty damn annoying. I schedule all my posts for the week on Sundays and now I'm left with nothing after two days' work prepping. Why isn't anyone from WP fixing this (or at least addressing it)?

There is a long standing issue that Staff are aware of.

Did you create the post or page on the dashboard of your blog? If were using the "Add New" on the main page for wordpress.com here http://wordpress.com/#!/post/ then images disappear as contents in drafts are lost and cannot be recovered. That link is only for creating "Asides":

Aside – These are brief snippets of text that aren’t quite whole blog posts. Useful for quick thoughts and anecdotes http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-formats/

Create posts only your own blog's dashboard to avoid those issues. Then you will be creating full posts and not asides. The full posts will have titles, can have categories assigned to them, the images will stop disappearing and the auto-save feature will operate so your won't lose drafts.

I have been drafting posts from my main dashboard (dashboard/post/add new) for some time since I figured out that the one from the main WP page doesn't have all the features.

Since I don't post mid-week, I don't know how long this pictures disappearing business has been going on. Are you (@thistimethisspace) suggesting that WP staff knows about these additional pic problems?

  14. As for me, I have been drafting posts in exactly the same way as always (*), and it was only on Monday that I encountered any difficulties with photos vanishing. Thus, as far as I am concerned, it is a very fresh problem.

(*) That is to say: Add New Post ( .../wp-admin/post-new.php). Save Draft. Preview. ... Eh, now where the hell did they go to?

  15. My husband and I have been having the exact same problem on our respective blogs this weekend. The photos are there, we save draft, the photos are gone (but the frame and caption are still there).

  16. I flagged this thread for Staff attention.

Thanks for flagging. In case it helps, my specific problem is that images upload and are stored in the Media Gallery, but they disappear in Preview mode and after a draft has been saved. As someone else mentioned, captions remain even after the image has disappeared, so that they hang like little ghosts. Everything looks fine in draft

      once
and then it all goes to hell.

  18. they disappear in Preview mode and after a draft has been saved.

Aha! Do you have third party cookies enabled on your browser?

  19. Timethief - I do not think 3rd-party cookies is the problem for my husband and me. We are having the same problem on two different computers, both with firefox, both accepting 3rd-party cookies. The html code for the image actually disappears after Save Draft or Update.

  20. This was also reported in another thread I flagged for Staff attention here:
    http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/why-do-my-images-disappear-when-i-hit-save-draft?replies=15

  21. I'm glad it isn't just me! I had been hoping the problem would have resolved itself but when I posted last night it was still the same. I'm posting from my dashboard, as usual, nothing has changed! Hoping someone from WP can help as this is incredibly annoying.

This is my first time in a thread like this so this is probably a dumb question, but will WP respond to us here, or do we need to just keep trying to load pics?

  23. I have this issue also. I've always used my photobucket account for my main images and it always worked no problem before. Something must have changed because if it auto-updates it's fine but if I update the page myself the images go away. Doesn't matter if it is in visual mode or text mode.

    It's getting frustrating.

We did not have a visible support Staff presence on this support forum until today for the last 6 days. Consequently, there are many threads flagged for Staff attention. They deal with those that have the earliest dates first so you are all in the waiting game here.

  25. Are you folks inserting images that you have uploaded yourselves, or images hotlinked from elsewhere?

Also, which browsers (and versions of) are you using?

  26. @macmanx
Firefox 15.0.1 and the images are stored in my WP library.

  27. Did you attempt to insert them after uploading through the post, or were they uploaded previously?

  28. Previously.

  29. Ok, that's rather interesting. Do you notice the same problem if you upload and insert them again through the post?

  30. Don't know about anyone else but...I'm using Firefox, have had the same problem whether the photos were from Photobucket, uploaded from my own computer or taken from elsewhere on the web. I've tried to use images that have already been uploaded as well as those uploaded through a post. And the problem is the same no matter what - as soon as I try to save the post, they're gone. Oh, and I've tried this on two different computers, each with different versions of Firefox, and neither works.
