Why are there annoying ads on my posts?

  1. I just now got a complaint from a user that there was some sort of pop up script causing the browser to crash, and it appears that the blog now shows extremely annoying ads on the posts. I can only replicate it in MS Explorer - it does not show up in Chrome. The nature of the ads makes me think that this cannot possibly be intentional from WordPress. (it is the "you are visitor number 10 000" type scam with an extremely intrusive flashing border.) Could it be that my account has been infected or is there another explanation?

The blog I need help with is gamephilosophynetwork.wordpress.com.

  2. If it's this one:

then yes, it has been placed by wordpress rather than some trojan.

The good news is you don't have to worry about getting a virus off your PC. The bad news is that the only way you can be 100% sure that this kind of crap will never appear on your blog is to pay, either for the no-ad upgrade or for hosting elsewhere. Any promises that ads will be 'discreet' or 'inobtrusive' can be safely ignored.

  3. WordPress.com has been running advertising on our free hosted blogs since 2006. Many bloggers do not know this because despite the fact they ticked the box required to get a free blog, they did not read the ToS. Many also do not read features page, or advertising entry in the support documents after registering their username and blog(s). Also note that as the ads do not display to us when we are logged in many bloggers do not realize they are there at all. The only way to get rid of all advertising on our free hosted WordPress.com blogs is to purchase an annually renewable No-Ads upgrade.

  4. @wank said,

    Sad but true.

  5. Put a disclaimer in your sidebar, either straight text or an image, with something like "WordPress puts ads on this blog, I don't. Clicking them will only encourage them."

  6. Or simply pay the cost of keeping ads OFF your blog. What is it, something like a dime a day? Geez, folks, there is no such thing as a free lunch...
That would be a HECK of a lot better for your blog, personal or business, than issuing disclaimers.
I pay it and I am HAPPY to. Even if I weren't concerned about the folks who give us all this for free I would... b/c some companies in my industry which I do NOT want my readers giving business to, were appearing on my blog. God forbid my readers think I recommend THEM... which is precisely what happens with ads. If you want to separate editorial content from ads... the only way to do it with wordpress.com is that dime a day. Pay it, and rest easy.

  7. Maybe I have plans for that dime. Maybe I've been using WordPress for five years and I'm totally aware of the cost of the anti-ad program, but putting a disclaimer in the sidebar is all I feel the issue is worth.

There actually is such a thing as a free lunch. If you chose to pay for all the upgrades and add-ons, to add cost to a free service, that's your choice. I prefer the "free" option.

Basic decorum, by the way, says don't use all-caps in the Forum.
