Why can't I get the Facebook embed function to work?

  1. I am not able to embed Facebook posts, even from pages that are public. I am copying the entire URL, and have tried both photo and non-photo updates. Nothing is working.

The blog I need help with is basinelectric.wordpress.com.

  2. Does = Do

  3. No, unfortunately.

  4. Okay then all I can do is tag this thread for Staff assistance. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

  5. Hi there,

Please be sure you are following the instructions to embed with a URL carefully. You will need to click on the timestamp for the Facebook post to get the correct URL to embed it.

If you are still having trouble with this, can you let me know the title of one of your blog posts where the embed didn't work? You can leave it as a draft in your blog and I can take a look at it there for you. Thanks!

  6. I'm not the original poster, but I'm having the same problem. I have carefully followed the instructions as you suggested, more than once, and it just doesn't work.

Here's a link to the one post I actually published. I appreciated any help you can give me. Thanks!

  7. @barrywallace - It looks like the Facebook URL you pasted in that post has been turned into a regular link instead of a Facebook embed. Can you try highlighting the Facebook URL in the post editor and then clicking the broken link button? Then update your post. That should fix the Facebook embed — please let me know how it goes!

  8. That didn't work, but I appreciate your help. Do you have any other suggestions? Thanks!

  9. Still a live link. Put the cursor right in the middle of that Facebook URL, hit the Unlink button, and Update the post.

  10. It's already unlinked in my editor (from following the previous instructions), so I don't even have the option to unlink it again. The Unlink button is grayed out.

  11. Look at it in the Text editor: are there any formatting tags around it, like alignment tags? If so, strip them out.

  12. Hi there,

I took a look at your post, and there were some HTML span tags surrounding your Facebook link. (You can view these from the text editor, as raincoaster mentioned.) I went ahead and removed those HTML tags from your post, and now the Facebook embed is working.

Please let me know if you have any questions about that!

  13. I do have a couple questions.

    1) The original WordPress blog post didn't mention having to use the Text editor, as opposed to the Visual editor. I'm assuming now that I have to use the Text editor for this to work.

    2) If I view the post in IE the embedded post displays properly. If I view it in Chrome it doesn't show up at all. Why it that?

Thanks again for all the help!

  14. Hi there,

    1) The original WordPress blog post didn't mention having to use the Text editor, as opposed to the Visual editor. I'm assuming now that I have to use the Text editor for this to work.

The Facebook embeds are actually set up to use the Visual editor. However, any additional formatting or linking that is added to the Facebook link you paste into the editor can cause problems for the embed. If pasting the link into the Visual editor doesn't work, you can switch over to the Text editor to make sure there isn't any extra code added to the link.

    2) If I view the post in IE the embedded post displays properly. If I view it in Chrome it doesn't show up at all. Why it that?

There could be something in your Chrome browser preventing the embedded post from appearing. (I can see it in the latest version of Chrome on my computer.)

First, can you make sure that Javascript is enabled in Chrome? If you aren't sure, you can check here: http://supportdetails.com/

If that doesn't work, try opening an Incognito Window in Chrome and look at your site there. If you can see the embedded post in an incognito window but not in a regular window, you may have a Chrome extension that's blocking the embedded post. In that case, try turning off your Chrome extensions and then turning them back on one-by-one until you find the culprit.

If that doesn't resolve the problem for you, please let me know and I can keep troubleshooting this for you!

  15. I think I've found the Chrome extension blocking the post. Thanks again for all your help!
