Why does Gravatar need my username and password?

    Does WordPress own Gravatar? Is it just another service of WordPress? I'm asking because there seem to be several places where I need to set up a "profile," which seems excessive.

    Why am I giving Gravatar my log-in information and why so many profiles?

    The blog I need help with is clarksblogcabin.wordpress.com.

    Both WordPress.com and Gravatar are owned by Automattic.
