Why does WP Publicize Edits on Old Posts?

  1. Just imported 400+ items from Tumblr to my new blog. Given the nature of Tumblr, a lot of these posts need some formatting changes and other edits (most notably the image posts on Tumblr did not have actual post titles and I am going through and adding post titles to them).

However, every time that I make an edit on an old post, it's publishing the picture to Facebook/Twitter/Tumblr. I would rather not uncheck Publicize every time I do an edit. Do I just need to turn off Publicize until I am done updating my 400+ posts?

The blog I need help with is thefuj.com.

  2. I discovered the same, unfortunate side-effect when moving my previously self-hosted blog to wordpress.com. I really wish this wasn't an issue; I can't think of any real value for such a feature, and even if there is, I don't imagine it outweighing the negative aspect of having to turn it off just to update old posts.

  3. +1 this is a real problem and extremely annoying. I just imported from a self-hosted blog to WordPress.com, and it looks like I'll have to deactivate all Publicize connections before fixing up old posts.

  4. I wish WP.com would give us an option to disable Publicize for old posts i.e. posts which already have Published status:

    http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/how-can-i-update-old-posts-without-syndicating-them?replies=8

  5. I've just been deselecting twitter, facebook and tumblr for each post I edit and that works, but what I cannot fix is the fact that it republishes to RSS for edits, too. Also annoying.

  6. Hi there - edits to previously published posts shouldn't normally be re-Publicized, so thanks to all of you for reporting this.

Could one or two of you please provide a link to an example of a post that was Publicized/re-posted to RSS twice, so I can show it to our developers for investigation? Thanks very much.

  7. "Re-Publicized" isn't the correct term here, since they were imported from another blog, they were never Publicized with WordPress. But when you edit an old post (which needs to be done with a lot of posts imported from another blogging system for incorrect tags, broken images, etc.) it updates the RSS feed and then Publicizes for the "first" time even though the post may be months old. An example of this was with this post I edited earlier this week:

  8. Thanks, fujontap, that's helpful. I've brought this to our developers so they can have a look.

  9. Thanks Kathryn for looking into this!

I had the same exact issue as fujontap mentioned with this link: http://swaroopch.com/2012/09/10/flying-fox/

  10. To kathrynwp:

Looks like it is still an issue based on what I have detailed below.

When I activated the Publicize feature to add my Facebook and Tumblr accounts, every post I made an update to (56) a few days later was re-published on my accounts even though I manually shared them earlier.

Today, I added my Twitter account and made a change to one of my post and it immediately posted the updated post even though I had previously shared it back in January. However, minutes later when I made another change to the same post, it did not duplicate/ re-publish the post to Twitter. Nor did it re-publicize to Facebook or Tumblr. I also checked my RSS feed today and did not see that the post was re-publicized/posted twice.

This is what I think is happening:

When you add an account to Publicize, if you make any updates to previous posts that were manually shared, they automatically will be publicized and duplicated to the account(s) you added. Any additional updates to the same post will not be re-publicized but it will for others.

Which is unfortunate because looks like what we need to do is deactivate Publicize when making initial updates to any post after adding new accounts so it does not duplicate the posts since I find no matter when I go in to update, it is being republished/duplicated.

I agree with swaroop and think it would help WP users if there was a feature we can choose to request that previously published posts not be re-publicized when adding new accounts to eliminate our having to physically turn off the feature every time we make an update.

As for posts imported from another blog, I am not familiar with that so I cannot make any suggestions. But if I ever have to try this feature, I will let you know what issues I may encounter.

    Thanks.

  12. I want to add tags to a post that was already published and publicized. When I go in to edit and add tags, I can't disconnect the publish on Facebook when I update (it doesn't all me to uncheck it). I don't want to republicize my post just to update my tags. Just want to add tags.

  13. I am also having the same trouble with tags as icelandica. As of yesterday, still noticing when making any updates to previous posts at any time, Publicize is republishing the post. I am hesitant when making changes because I have go to the accounts and delete the duplicate post which is a lot trouble and is very time consuming. Please help.Thanks.

  14. Hi all,

Icelandica, were your posts previously imported from another site? If not, then this is a separate issue from the original one.

joaynn510 - thank you for your report as well.

Would one of you two mind please starting a new thread, since this issue - while similar to those of the others - is a different one, since your posts were not previously imported. Feel free to link to the new thread from here or add the modlook tag, and staff will take a look.

    Thanks!

  15. Thank you for the advice kathrynwp. Will do. However not sure how to link to the new thread or add the modlook tag but will do my best. Thanks again!

  16. Kathrynwp,

I figured out how to the include modlook tag but not sue about adding the link.

    Thank you.

  17. Great, thanks for doing that. Here's the link, which I copy-pasted from the address bar:

  18. kathrynwp,
I am trying to start a new thread. I am not copying old material from another site onto a new site. I am just trying to add tags on an existing post. Every time I do that, I automatically publicize on Facebook. And I cannot unclick the Facebook box when I try to edit near the publish button.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

  19. Icelandica - please see this thread and feel free to add to it if you like:

  20. Kathrynwp,

Thanks for adding the link and for all your help.

Received a prompt response to my inquiry yesterday. Thanks!

  21. joaynn510 - Excellent, glad to hear it!
