Why have homepage views--but not visits or post views--dramatically increased?

  1. In the last ten days, views of my blog's homepage have dramatically increased--up 400% from the prior week. However, the number of unique visitors to the homepage does not appear to have increased, and the numbers of visitors and views on all post pages has not increased.

This dramatic change in the number of visits to the homepage makes me feel like a problem has developed, and it may be harming the reliability of our stats. I can find no explanation for the sudden increase in views--but not visitors--and only on the homepage.

The blog I need help with is iaenvironment.wordpress.com.

  2. I am having the same problem!! Exactly the same thing. It's kind of creeping me out.

  3. Our stats are not real time stats and take hours to update.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/stats/
Visitors can click directly into posts found on search engine page results without visiting the front page of the blog at all.

Also be aware that likes and shares and reblogs are not page views. In fact, likes, shares and reblogs are completely misleading when you are talking about page view stats. Your followers and anyone with a WordPress.com blog who is logged into WordPress.com can "like", "share" and "reblog" your posts in several locations such as the Reader, without ever clicking into your blog and creating a single page view stat.

You can control the length of the entry sent out on your RSS feed here > Settings > Reading. Choose the "summary" setting for your RSS feed rather than to "full text". That will compel followers who are not using mobiles to click into the blog to read the full post which will create a page view stat.

Visitors using a mobile can read the full post without creating a page view stat. http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/wordpresscom-reader-show-full-text?replies=31#post-1373606

Note that setting the RSS Feed to summary does not affect the length of the post displayed on the front page or main page for posts on the blog. To create excerpts there we can split content by inserting "the more tag" http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/

Also note that you can disable "Sharing" on the same page:
    Settings > Reading
Add to each article in your feed:
    Categories
    Tags
    Comment count
    Sharing
Changes may not appear until you create a new post or your news reader refreshes.

  4. @iaenvironment
    @rlcarterrn

P.S. This thread has been tagged for Staff to take a close look at both of your blogs and see if the stats are working properly. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

  5. I have the same situation too. The homepage stats are way up, but post views are way down.

  6. Thanks to everyone who has responded so far. It is nice to know others are in the same boat. Thanks @timethief for flagging for staff review. Perhaps they will have some explanation.

  7. I've taken a look at the stats for everyone. For your blogs, iaenvironment and kierontownend, I don't see anything that strikes me out of the ordinary. Sometimes you will get a lot of visits to a homepage, especially if someone linked to that page, without subsequent views of other pages.

For rlcarterrn's blog, though, I did see some crazy stats (2 visitors, with 3000 page views between them?), so I am looking into that further.

  8. Thanks for looking into it. It's creeping me out & making me wonder if I should deactivate my blog which I really don't want to do. Should I be worried?

  9. Thanks for looking into it. It's creeping me out & making me wonder if I should deactivate my blog which I really don't want to do. Should I be worried?

  10. rlcarterrn, I wouldn't worry too much. Let's see what I can find out. It could just be a glitch somewhere.

  11. Thanks Jackie, for taking a look at this. I wish I knew who our mystery referrer is. I'm glad the situation does not raise red flags with you. Generally we are very happy WordPress users! Thanks for your support.

  12. Thank you for taking the time to look at the problem.

  13. Ok, someone named kraftbj from WordPress is also looking into this & says the hits are actually coming from IP address that I used! How weird is that? But it does make me feel better. Thanks for the help!

  14. Ok, rlcarterrn, based on the fact that someone is communicating with you off this thread, I am going to reclassify it as resolved--I think all of us on the thread have now had a response from WordPress engineers.

    Thanks everyone, for your assistance.

  15. That's fine, thanks!

  16. As it turns out, the issue was also being addressed here: http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/why-so-many-views-so-few-visitors?replies=13

As such, I think it's appropriate to mark this one as resolved, and I am going to close the thread as well. Any further issues/concerns should be addressed in the thread linked above.
