Why is LinkedIn breaking menus on blog/category pages?

  1. Gentlemen:

When I use your JetPack sharing function on http://brcapitalinc.com for the most part it works great. I am using the 2011 theme with extensions. However when I add the LinkedIn button, either by itself or in the share envelope with the other share buttons it wrecks the menus and turns them into a list.

Also, it is not possible to turn off sharing on selected pages, even when I uncheck "Show Sharing Buttons on this Post" at the bottom of the page. When the page is saved or updated the check box reappears.

Thanks for your help. Bill Roller

  2. Could you send us a screenshot of the page where you're seeing this?

    Sorry for the inconvenience.

  3. Sorry for the confusion. I'm new at this. I removed LinkedIn because I did not want a broken looking website. I added it back. and will leave it in if you want to look at the pages. Here is a shot of null with LinkedIn:

Here is a shot without LinkedIn

You can see that it only happens on blog and category posts (subset of blog pages)

    for example: http://brcapitalinc.com/category/articles/

But it does not occur on pages, and it only occurs with LinkedIn.

  4. Note also that it does not happen on single post pages. For example:

    http://brcapitalinc.com/2012/05/15/morning-market-report-5152012/

  5. I'm actually not seeing the problem myself, were you able to resolve the issue?

If not, which browser (and version of) are you using?

  6. No it is not resolved. It is not a problem in the home page, custom pages, or single posts. It is a problem on the blog, or category pages.

    Go to http://brcapitalinc.com/blog/

    or to http://brcapitalinc.com/category/articles/

    It only occurs with LinkedIn.

    Bill

  7. OK. Very interesting. I checked the site with 4 browsers with LinkedIn added for sharing:

    Chrome--No problems
    Firefox--No problems
Internet Explorer 9.0--All menus on all pages blow up.
Internet Explorer 9.0 64-Bit--Menus on blog/multiple post pages blow up other pages OK.

    Without LinkedIn:

    No problems in any browsers.

  8. Huh, that is weird. Would you please try disabling all of IE's add-ons?

If you don't have any, or if disabling them made no difference, try switching IE into or out of Compatibility mode (whichever is the opposite of what it is now).

  9. OK. Here are the results
IE9 Extensions Off, Pages OK, Blog page menus blow up.
IE9 Extensions Off, Compatibility Mode, pages ok, Blog page menus blow up

IE9 64 Bit. Extensions Off, Pages OK, Blog page menus blow up.
IE9 64 bit, Extensions Off, Compatibility Mode, Pages OK, Blog page menus blow up.

IE9 Extensions Off, No LinkedIn, No problems
IE9 Extensions Off, Compatibility Mode, No LinkedIn, No problems

IE9 64 Bit Extensions Off, No LinkedIn, No problems
IE9 64 Bit Extensions Off, Compatibility Mode, No LinkedIn, No problems

  10. Ok, now I see the problem under IE 9 too. This is very strange indeed.

Do you still have the same problem if you temporarily switch to the Twenty Eleven theme?

  11. Yes. When I switch to the pure Twenty Eleven 2011 theme, the menu appears properly on pages, and single posts. It does not appear at all on blog or category pages.

  12. Ok, so this definitely specific to that theme. Which theme were you using?

  13. No. I'm saying it is not specific to that theme, because it still breaks when I switch to the pure 2011 theme it only breaks in a different way. Instead of forming a list on blog/category . It does not show up at all on blog/category pages at all. On all other pages and single posts, it shows up properly. I'm using 2011 as a child theme.

  14. This is very odd, I am unable to reproduce the issue on any of my test blogs.

Would you please temporarily deactivate all other plugins so we can rule-out any plugin conflicts?

  15. I deactivated all plugins including Twenty Eleven Theme Extensions.

    With Jetpack deactivated. No problems.

With Jetpack activated without LinkedIn, no problem.

With Jetpack activated and withLinkedIn menu breaks,

  16. I also changed to the pure Twenty Eleven Theme (not a child them) without the Twenty Eleven Extensions. Same problem.

I then changed to the the Twenty Ten Theme. Same problem.

  17. I also checked just to make sure there was not an interaction problem within the Jetpack sharing function between the different social sites:

JetPack enabled, no social sites selected: No problems
JetPack enabled, LinkedIn only, not in share envelope: Menus blow up on blog/category.
JetPack enabled, LinkedIn only, in share envelope: Menus blow up on blog/category.
JetPack enabled, No LinkedIn, all other services outside share envelope: No problems
JetPack enabled, No LinkedIn, all other services inside share envelope: No problems.

Have you looked at the LinkedIn function?

  18. I've looked at it, but without being able to reproduce it on any of my test sites, it's hard to tell exactly what to look for.

I'm going to pass this up to the big guns.

  19. So what did the big guns say?

  20. Unfortunately, there isn't much we can do.

You're using the official buttons, and all that does is pull in the code from LinkedIn. None of the button code comes from us in this case, not even the display code. So, it's basically an issue on LinkedIn's end that they would need to fix.

In this case, the best thing to do would be to not use their official button, or just not display the LinkedIn button.
