Why is the Upcoming Events widget not showing events on the Google calendar?

  1. Why is upcoming events widget not working? I use the Upcoming Events widget to show the next 5 upcoming events from a Google calendar. The widget shows all the events with the wrong date and time (Sept 12 or 13, 2013, 8am-8pm) instead of the date and time from the Google calendar. It is skipping events (not showing the next 5 on the calendar). And it is creating events that aren't on the Google calendar. I tried repasting the ical code from the Google calendar. That didn't do anything. I inserted a new Upcoming events widget and that didn't do anything either. What is wrong with the Upcoming Events widget?

The blog I need help with is tcwilliamsband.wordpress.com.

  2. Thanks for reporting this. The widget should be working, but there is a bug happening right now where repeated events aren't displayed in the right timezone in some cases, and we're looking int that.

Note that when you make updates to the calendar, they may take a little time to show up in the widget.

  3. Unfortunately, it is still not working. And it isn't a problem with repeated events. It is just showing random events all scheduled to happen the next day. And the events aren't even ones in the google calendar I'm trying to display through the widget. Here's the ical feed code, in case that is useful in debugging:
    https://www.google.com/calendar/ical/tr88h8d99t3hrv2d938m4jmcng%40group.calendar.google.com/public/basic.ics

  4. It would help a lot to go over a couple specific examples if you're willing. I checked http://tcwilliamsband.wordpress.com/ and I don't see the upcoming events widget there now. I understand if you removed it because the event times weren't correct. If you'd like to add it back to try some tests with me, I can take a closer look.

  5. Yes, I did remove it because it wasn't showing correct dates or times. I was busy this weekend, so couldn't respond back. How do we arrange a time to get together to trouble-shoot this? (I'm in the Eastern time zone, if that helps.)

  6. We should be able to work through it here on the forums. If you could just tell me a bit more detail about the items you've mentioned already, that would help.

The widget shows all the events with the wrong date and time (Sept 12 or 13, 2013, 8am-8pm) instead of the date and time from the Google calendar.

Can you pick one of those and tell me the title, the correct date/time from the Google calendar, and the incorrect time showing in the widget? That way it's a specific example I can refer back to when testing, and I can also look at the raw data in the .ics file you linked (which is great, I'll need to look at that).

It is skipping events (not showing the next 5 on the calendar).

Are you sure that wasn't due to a limit on the number of events that are shown via the widget?

And it is creating events that aren't on the Google calendar.

That sounds strange! A specific example for this would help, such as the title and date/time for one that you saw in the widget that is not in the Google Calendar.

To get current examples, you could turn the widget back on, copy a couple of the wrong items, paste them here and let me know what the date/time should be for the specific examples.

There is a bug still, I have reported it already but I'm gathering data to add to that report to see if I can find examples that will be useful for the developers.

  7. Hopefully this will help. I also have screen shots in a Word file, but didn't see an easy way to attache a document to this.

    Upcoming Events widget added with
    iCal feed: https://www.google.com/calendar/ical/tr88h8d99t3hrv2d938m4jmcng%40group.calendar.google.com/public/basic.ics
    show 3 items

Upcoming events displays these next three events, none of which are actually on the Google calendar in question:
    • Exams November 13, 2013 at 12:00 am – 12:00 am
    • HS Band Assessment November 13, 2013 at 12:00 am – 12:00 am ???
    • Exams November 14, 2013 at 12:00 am – 12:00 am

Actual next three calendar events are
    Possible Play-off Game
    Fri, November 15, 12am – Sun, November 17, 12am

Craft Fair?? - Jazz Band A
    Sat, November 16, 12am – Sun, November 17, 12am

    VMEA
    Thu, November 21, 12am – Sun, November 24, 12am

  8. I just wanted to post a quick update to say thank you for the examples and let you know that I've added a note about this to the bug report already on file.

If you still have the screenshot, you could upload it to an image sharing service such as http://snag.gy/ If you drag to highlight the image inside the Word document, you might be able to paste it right into http://snag.gy/ If you can't get it to work, don't worry because I think I wrote out a description that's detailed enough. (I *always* like getting screenshots if I can though!). :)

  9. Thank you again for providing a detailed example before. We made a new update to fix the problem where the wrong timezone was showing for some recurring events in the upcoming events widget.

Can you add the widget back again and let me no if you're still having any trouble with recurring events?

  10. I wasn't having trouble with recurring events before, but I added the widget back to the site and am getting both actual and "phantom events". For today (December 10), when I set it to show the next 5 events, it shows these 5 events:

    1. Marching band rehearsal and sectionals December 10, 2013 at 3:30 pm – 5:20 pm Music wing, stadium
    2. Exams December 10, 2013 at 7:00 pm – 7:00 pm
    3. December 11, 2013
    4. HS Band Assessment December 10, 2013 at 7:00 pm – 7:00 pm ???
    5. Mandatory Sugar Bowl Meeting December 11, 2013 at 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm King street cafeteria Pizza courtesy of the band boosters served at 6:30. Official meeting starts at 7:00.

Events 1, 3 and 5 are real. (though, yes, event 3 is some error on the band director's part--he created an event with no information beyond the date!)
Events 2 and 4 are bogus--not on the calendar with the ical feed of https://www.google.com/calendar/ical/tr88h8d99t3hrv2d938m4jmcng%40group.calendar.google.com/public/basic.ics

Since the band goes to the Sugar Bowl in a couple weeks and it won't be good to have bad calendar information showing up, I'm not leaving the widget operational on the site.

Here's a screen shot that may help, since I disabled the widget:
    http://tcwilliamsband.files.wordpress.com/2013/12/screen-shot-of-messed-up-calendar1.docx

thanks for trying. It's a useful feature when it works!
    sharon

  11. Quick question, can you tell me what program you're using to create the events? Were they created directly in Google Calendar online?

  12. as far as I know, the band director is creating them directly in the Google calendar online (not including the Google calendar as an invitee from Outlook or something like that. I can try and verify that with him later this week, if it would be helpful.

  13. Let me look at the data from the ics file linked in your widget compared to your description first. I saw your note yesterday but haven't had time to look in more detail just yet. I will work on it today and let you know if I still need the calendar app info or not. Thanks!

  14. Okay, I've checked the data and reported the issue. Thanks for going over the details with me!

Now I'd like to try to find a temporary workaround that we might be able to use for cases like this until the widget can be reviewed again by the developers.

I checked the ics file for an event with the title "HS Band Assessment" and a location of "???" and I found this:

    DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20140307
    DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20140308
    RRULE:FREQ=DAILY;UNTIL=20140308
    DTSTAMP:20131211T120243Z
    UID:jd9gammguqlu91n6d58srdv9rg@google.com
    CREATED:20130202T152503Z
    DESCRIPTION:
    LAST-MODIFIED:20130202T152503Z
    LOCATION:???
    SEQUENCE:0
    STATUS:CONFIRMED
    SUMMARY:HS Band Assessment
    TRANSP:TRANSPARENT
    END:VEVENT

It looks to me like that event should actually be showing up on 2014 Mar 7 but instead it always shows up on the current day.

Can you try finding that event (you'll be able to tell it's the right one because of the "???" in the location field), remove it, re-add it, and let me know when that's done?

  15. There is no event scheduled March 7 2014. The HS Band Assessment appointments are Feb 28 and Mar 1 2014 with location TBD.

  16. It's possible I'm reading the raw data wrong. But here it is again:

    DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20140307
    DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20140308
    RRULE:FREQ=DAILY;UNTIL=20140308
    DTSTAMP:20131211T120243Z
    UID:jd9gammguqlu91n6d58srdv9rg@google.com

    DESCRIPTION:
    LAST-MODIFIED:20130202T152503Z
    LOCATION:???
    SEQUENCE:0
    STATUS:CONFIRMED
    SUMMARY:HS Band Assessment
    TRANSP:TRANSPARENT
    END:VEVENT

Can you find that event in your calendar at all? I copied it from https://www.google.com/calendar/ical/tr88h8d99t3hrv2d938m4jmcng%40group.calendar.google.com/public/basic.ics

I'll also find out if I can check in with someone else about this issue to make sure I'm reading everything right and to get help on my side.

  17. That's the right iCal formatted link. (at least it's the one I get when I go to the calendar settings and get the iCal address (rather than the xml or html address). I'm no expert at reading iCal code, but I'd say you are right that it thinks an event is happening on march 7 through march 8. Looks like it was created Feb 2 2013.

The calendar doesn't show any events on March 7 2014. The event on March 8 2014 is the SAT and it is currently in as an all-day event.

Here's the link to the google calendar itself, as embedded on our band website in WordPress, in case that helps anything:
    http://tcwilliamsband.wordpress.com/calendar/google-calendar/

  18. Thanks for looking for that! Another update has been made to the widget, and I think it fixes the issues we've been reviewing in this thread.

I tested your ics file on a test site, and it worked in my test (the "HS Band Assessment" event with location "???" is no longer showing in the widget). Can you try adding the widget back and check to see if it's working correctly for you now?

  19. Better, but doesn't look like it is fixed yet. I added the Upcoming events back in and had it show the next 5 events:

    1. District Band Auditions December 13, 2013 at 7:00 pm – 7:00 pm West Potomac HS
    2. ACT December 13, 2013 at 7:00 pm – 7:00 pm
    3. December 16, 2013 at 7:00 pm – 7:00 pm
    4. Final marching band rehearsal December 17, 2013 at 3:30 pm – 5:20 pm Stadium Run through and review shows, final announcements
    5. Mid West December 17, 2013 at 7:00 pm – December 21, 2013 at 7:00 pm Chicago

The first three are each one day earlier in the widget than they are in the calendar. The 4th event is the right title, date, and time. Then it skips another event that is on the calendar for December 17. The 5th listed event is also starting a day early, though it ends on the right day. On the calendar that one goes from Dec 18 through the 21, but the widget is showing it as December 17-21.

I changed it to show the next 8 events and 6, 7, and 8 are correct.
    6. FC Hammond Band Concert December 17, 2013 at 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm
    7. GW Middle School Band Concert December 18, 2013 at 7:30 pm – 8:30 pm
    8. Music Assemblies December 19, 2013 at 7:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Something odd with the first several....thanks again for your efforts.
    sharon

  20. The first three are each one day earlier in the widget than they are in the calendar.

It seems to be happening for events that are marked as all day events and multiple day events.

The "Music Assemblies" one is a good example:

    BEGIN:VEVENT
    DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20131220
    DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20131221
    DTSTAMP:20131216T174951Z
    UID:s3s1ufbebh3j9ibe6gn5kdsbtg@google.com
    CREATED:20130506T124442Z
    DESCRIPTION:
    LAST-MODIFIED:20130506T124442Z
    LOCATION:
    SEQUENCE:0
    STATUS:CONFIRMED
    SUMMARY:Music Assemblies
    TRANSP:TRANSPARENT
    END:VEVENT

Could you check one thing for me? Can you look around in the Google Calendar settings for your calendar and look up the Calendar Time Zone setting and make sure it's correct and maybe even re-save that setting? Once that's done, find the Music Assemblies event and re-save it. I'm not sure if it will make a difference, but I thought it might be worth testing.
