why isn't the link button available when I'm drafting my post

  1. i am drafting a post and the link button is grayed out and not available for use?
    why?

The blog I need help with is mypostcardsfromhome.wordpress.com.

  2. The link button remains grayed out until your select ie. highlight the anchor text that you wish to link to.

  3. The the guide for creating links in posts and pages is here http://en.support.wordpress.com/links/

For creating links in a text widget see:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/links/text-widget-links/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/text-widget/
You may find it easier to create your links in the Visual editor in a draft post first and then copy and paste the code from the Text (HTML) editor into a text widget.

This is the general link model:
    <a href="URL HERE">Highlighted anchor text here</a>
This is the visual result but as it's just an example it's not actually linked to a page:
    Highlighted anchor text here

    1. Enter the anchor text you want to link to first.
    2. Then use your mouse to highlight that anchor text.
    3. Next click the chain icon in the Visual editor and proceed to create the link in the pop-up box.
