   How do I widen the columns on my page so that everything isn't just crammed in the middle?

   You have chosen a narrow theme. You have two choices and they are:
   (1) Choose another theme -> Presentation -> Themes
   (2) Or pay for an upgrade ($15. per year per blog) and undertake css customization of the theme yourself.

   We have no clue which "thingy" you are talking about. Please clearly state a question in a way that we can understand you and help you. Also include a link to your blog so we can see what you refer to.
