jorstapWhy will a widget show up in the footer but not the sidebar?
I have selected the "Modularity Lite" Theme, checked the "enable the optional sidebar" checkbox in Theme Options and placed two widgets (FB and Twitter) in the sidebar. Neither shows up. When I move either or both to the footer, it/they show(s) up.

That's very strange. I have flagged this thread so it will be moved to the Themes Forum where Themes Staff will take a look at your blog and help you.

You've set a static page as your blog front, and you've probably selected the no-sidebar template instead of the default template for that page.
