By clicking on the white and blue icon on the righthand corner you can open a text widget and enter text into it. By clicking on the X in the top right hand corner you can close the widget. Be sure to click "save changes" when you are done. Here are illustrated instructions http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/12/24/using-the-text-widget/
