   Is there a way to create spacers in the sidebar to make the widgets seem less grouped together? thanks

   Yes. You can add text widgets inbetween and paste this in them:
    
   Or this:
   <div style="height:1.4em;"> </div>
   (The first is a simple, fixed-distance, solution; the second is of course adjustable, by changing the number.)

   I find if you title all your widgets there is generally enough space.
