I noticed on someone else's blog (not wordpress) a widget that was a list of the locales of recent visitors to the site. It was kind of cool...! Does such a thing exist on wordpress?

Yes, but not built-in. There are a lot of widgets that will show where your visitors are coming from, including ClustrMaps.
