widgets not on home page, only at bottom of posts

  1. Hi - I have chosen two templates I really like - Suburbia and The Columnist. But on both, I can't get the widgets I want (categories, recent posts) on the home page. They show up at the bottom of all of my post pages (those linked to from the home page). And on the widget setup page, I have definitely dragged them to the "Sidebar" option, not the "Bottom Area" options.

The only thing both templates seem to accommodate in the home page sidebar is the "About" link.

Am I missing something, doing something wrong?

  3. You need to read every detailed theme description page for every theme. You need to know that the old days when there was a sidebar on every theme designed into the theme to appear on each and every page in the blog are long gone.

    Widgets

Suburbia supports five widget optional areas — four in the footer and one in the sidebar in single post and page views.

    Widget Areas
Four widget areas are provided enabling you to add your own custom content directly below the content area in single posts and pages. Widgets will not appear in any template where multiple posts are displayed.

  5. Am I missing something, doing something wrong?

You are not doing anything wrong. You are missing the fact that neither theme is designed to display widgets on the front page of the blog.

To find free themes with sidebars in every page in the blog you can sort through these ones: http://en.wordpress.com/themes/filter/two-columns+blog/type/free/

  6. I really appreciate all of the responses. It never occurred to me that having things like Recent Posts would be a premium offering (because I know nothing about coding -- and I see those things on almost every blog I visit). I am actually not averse to paying for a theme, just haven't found one I like better than Columnist.

    Thanks again!

  7. You're welcome.

  8. There are many free themes that also have 'recent posts' and other widgets on the sidebar. Some have space for 2, 3, 5 - just depends on the theme, but there are free ones.

  9. I was having this issue too, thanks timethief and others for the responses. I keep running into random issues like this that take me much longer than they should to fix lol. Maybe I should just hire someone to do it but I like the idea of doing these things myself and slowly getting better. Ok, enough rambling!
