wordpress for dummies - how do i start from scratch?

    How are worpress themes customized? Do i need a web publishing tool like Dreamweaver?

    I have a web site that i created with dreamweaver and would like to replace it with a wordpress theme - How do i do that? I have a wordpress blog attached but have no idea what i did to create it :(
