Wordpress Upgrades using Visa

  1. Kenya not appearing amongst the countries that can use Visa cards to pay for wordpress upgrades, yet I'm from Kenya, and have a Visa Card that I normally use for online purchases.

The blog I need help with is amritakenya.wordpress.com.

  2. WordPress.com uses PayPal as the payment processor, and as such, can only accept payment from countries they support: https://www.paypal.com/worldwide/

If for whatever reason, they have chosen to block payment from
your country, you will not be able to purchase an upgrade here unless you have a source of payment outside of it.

In addition to major credit cards Mastercard, VISA, American Express, Discover, and PayPal https://www.paypal.com/worldwide/ WordPress.com can accept echecks and some debit cards.

The debit card must have a VISA or Mastercard symbol on it, and should work just like a credit card when selecting the VISA or Mastercard option on the payment form, even though it's a debit card.

    More about echecks here:

WordPress.com may also accept Bitcoin for payment of certain upgrades but cannot be used to purchase domains or premium themes at this time.

  3. Thanks, Timethief, but last year, I used the very same credit card to purchase a wordpress upgrade for yet another of my sites. Paypal works fine with Kenya. Yesterday, I decided to use Paypal to pay for my upgrade. I got a notification that my credit card had been charged some 18 dollars, but my site has not yet got the upgrade. What could be going wrong?

I am sorry but Kenya is no longer listed as a PayPal supported country and there's nothing that can be done about that.

  5. The transactions has been denied and you haven't been charged.

In your case you might be interested in using Bitcoin instead: http://en.support.wordpress.com/bitcoin/

  6. @kardotim
Is what I posted above out of date? Can bitcoin now be used for domain and premium theme purchase?

  7. No, you were right. Sorry for the confusion!

@alphabrane You might want to try to purchase the domain elsewhere and manually redirect the domain to your WordPress.com blog. Check with the domain registrar to see if they support this.

  8. Awwww. Okay, let me check with the other companies offering domains for sale. If you can, kindly send me the url to the WordPress that deals with redirection of domains purchased elsewhere to wordpress.com blogs.

I'm still wondering why, less than an year after I purchased a similar upgrade using Visa, wordpress would suddenly stop accepting Kenyan debit cards.

  9. You could try to register your domain at GoDaddy. They support domain forwarding: http://support.godaddy.com/help/article/422/forwarding-or-masking-your-domain-name

As mentioned before, we use PayPal as the payment processor. They can only accept payments from countries they currently support: https://www.paypal.com/worldwide/

  10. Thanks a lot for this information, Kardotim. Let me deal with godaddy, and then get back here with some feedback. Will be in touch. :-)
