Wordpress.com and.org confusion

  1. So I started a WordPress.com blog to set up my portfolio. Also redirected my domain name to WordPress and had to pay the $12 per year fee. Then I realized that I can't have a proper gallery in WordPress.com because of unsupported plug-ins, and that WordPress.org offers that instead. Should have done this first before I did the domain redirection thing :p

So basically I'm still confused about the connection between the two..If I use WordPress.org instead so that I can install plug-ins, will it still link to my WordPress.com account? Or does this means that I have to export my WordPress.com blog to .org and I've pretty much wasted my $12? Or better still, is there some way to have a photo gallery in WordPress.com? I like WordPress.com because of it's convenience and straightforwardness.

I appreciate any help!! I have very limited web knowledge so get easily confused, so any guidance will be much appreciated! Thanks!

The blog I need help with is germainechan.com.

  2. WordPress.ORG is not a hosting service, that is where the wordpress software is distributed and supported.

What you are actually doing is self-hosting a blog on a third-party hosting service such as godaddy, bluehost, etc., and using the software from wordpress.ORG.

A self-hosted blog is a stand-alone installation and is not connected to wordpress.COM in any way.

You will have to export your contents from here and then import it into the self-hosted installation.

WordPress.COM does offer a gallery function, but compared to some of the self-hosted plugins, it is very basic and does not offer any sort of thickbox or lightbox image features.

  3. Also, a self-hosted installation comes with more responsibilities. You are responsible for all installations, all upgrades, all backups and all troubleshooting. If something goes wrong, you have to figure it out and fix it.

The $12 you paid for domain mapping, you can probably get a refund on if it has been less than 30 days.
