I'm looking for the wordpress.com equivalent of:
http://www.tumblr.com/buttons
https://twitter.com/about/resources/buttons
In other words I'd to add a 'follow me on wordpress.com' button to my own external website (in the same way you can do for Tumblr and Twitter). Is that possible? My Google foo is letting me down.

You could use any button-sized image you choose and make it an image link with common HTML.
I don't know if you would be allowed to use the WP 'circle W' logo or not.
Yes I'd considered doing that...but a 'follow' button would also be nice. I was surprised there wasn't something 'official' (and easy to find) like there is for Twitter, Tumblr and lots of other social media type sites.

WordPress.com isn't really a social media site. They want to encourage people to get WordPress.com accounts and see the Follow button on their admin bar all the time instead.
And blog sharing buttons are generally blog-specific, so I suggest using a version of your blavatar for that.
Fair enough - still feels like a strange omission to me.
