Wordpress.com Email Comment Plug-In

  1. Hi there. At wordpress.org, users can utilize a plug-in called 'Comment Reply Notification'. This is a plugin that automatically sends an email to someone when a reply is made to their comment. A lot of wordpress.com users lose readers because they are never notified that the author responded, unless they have a wordpress.com site themselves. Please add this plug-in! I know readers can check off to receive email replies to comments, but that results in the readers receiving an email for every single new comment made on that post, instead of just sending them the author's response to start a conversation.

The blog I need help with is thesirenstale.com.

  2. We have the ability to subscribe to any comments on any free hosted WordPress.com blog posts. There is an optional setting we can use for that purpose. See here > Settings > Discussion and scroll down to:

Follow Comments __ Show a 'follow comments'' option in the comment form

  3. I know readers can check off to receive email replies to comments, but that results in the readers receiving an email for every single new comment made on that post, instead of just sending them the author's response to start a conversation.

Clicking the link in the email returns to the post you followed so you can read the responses from the author along with all other responses.

  4. Hi timethief - yes, I use this function already. However, for users that are not on wordpress.com and who aren't aware of the need to check this box on wordpress.com to be notified when there's a response, this limits discussion and interaction through wordpress.com. This makes a problem specifically for users who are used to more versatile comment functions like disqus, where they are automatically emailed responses.

Just based off the limitations of functions and plug-in's, I've seen far too many people abandon wordpress for blogspot and typepad and other user-customizable websites. It's unfortunate.

  5. Hi, I feel the same way. I wish there was something I could integrate such as disqus as you mention above.... timethief, can this be pointed towards a wordpress person who can help propose the addition of plug-ins like this for comments?
    Cheers

  6. This thread is ion the Ideas Forum already - don't hold your breath.

I'm not sure if you have read the support docs. There is no FTP access and no blogger installed plugin capability on free hosted WordPress.com blogs.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/ftp-access/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/

There is no upgrade you can purchase here that provides FTP access and the ability to install plugins and or any third party themes. If you want FTP access and to install plugins or third party themes then you will have to hire a web host and set up your own WordPress.org install.

  8. You don't need a wordpress.com account to subscribe to the comments on any WP.com blog.

  9. Thanks for the info timethief, raincoaster. I have been searching the forums and see there is already much discussion about it. I am starting up a cooking blog and working on the plan for as many people as possible to participate and comment without trouble... although I am still a newbie and still learning about all this. Cheers for your help.
