If you’ve purchased and registered your domain through WordPress.com and now want it to point to a blog or website hosted elsewhere then you can do this by updating the nameservers.

http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/domain-management/#update-nameserversIf you’ve purchased and registered your domain elsewhere then that’s where you must go to re-point (update) the nameservers.

Hi timethief thanks for your reply i had a initial wordpress free blog then i added my own domain name http://www.knightsoftheturntable.co.uk via 123 reg and now i have signed up for self host via bluehost and imported my wordpress.com xml file but my web address is now different so im assuming my name servers are still set as wordpress.com through 123 reg and thats why im not getting it on my bluehost account, is that right? so i need to change my nameservers through 123 reg not wordpress.com?

ok cool so Ive changed them to n1.bluehost.com and n2.bluehost.com so will that repoint my wordpress.org site automatically to my http://www.knightsoftheturntable.co.uk address?

Be aware that it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

You all be welcome
I just looked at whatsmydns.net and it looks like your changes are well underway – but as @TT says – access can be erratic due to uneven changes and local caching issues.
Best advice, relax and take a walk or something. You will probably be the last one to see the changes, if you clear your browser cache and force a page reload sometime helps to see the changes

cheers guys your both stars!! one quick question the bluehost agent said once thats completed id need to update my url in my bluehost control panel after propagation so that the temp url changes to http://www.knightsoftheturntable.co.uk, is that right or sound right? many thanks once again Andrew

Something needs to be changed at Blue Host so that your domain name is mapped to your blog – that should be able to be done anytime – even before the name servers are changed – since the name servers have been changed – you should do the changes at Blue Host so traffic goes to your blog
