Wordpress.com to WordPress.org

  1. Hi everyone,

I am new to the whole WordPress thing, although I have been using RapidWeaver for quite some time on my mac. Last night I have successfully registered on WordPress.com and bought several upgrades such as my personal domain, which is akarev.com, CSS customisation and a premium theme (Headlines by WooThemes). Now, only after I purchased it all and started customising my blog I soon realised that wordpress.com does not support custom Javascrypts or AD's placed on my blog. From what I understand, I had to register on wordpress.org instead. Now, the question is, is it possible for me now to transfer all of my purchases e.g. my domain, and a theme to the newly registered wordpress.org account? If so, how can I do it, or where can I read about it?

Thank you very much in advance.

    Yours sincerely,

    Aleksandr

  2. It does not look like you have any content on your site, so might be just easier to cancel everything BUT your domain name registration (change name-servers to new host) and set your site up on a new host.

  3. Hi timethief,

Thanks for your reply, although I am not really willing to pay over $100 to transfer my newely created blog. It is not worth it. Although I have a question, will it be possible for me to keep my domain e.g. akarev.com if I will now move to wordpress.org? This whole thing sound so strange to me :( I am very sorry if my questions do not make much sense, I am just really frustrated now because I spent approximately $100 last night for this blog just to find out that I have very limited number of functions here on wordpress.com :(

  4. WordPress.COM has a liberal refund policy and they are one of the cheapest domain registrars around.

  5. Auxclass,

You are correct, I have just created it last night and been playing around with it up until this morning. Than I tried to insert a few widgets to my sidebar, such as Twitter widget from the website and SoundCloud widget. It would not be a problem for me at all to set up a new blog on wordpress.org and buy a new host and domain, however, I spent $45 on the premium theme, and this is something I regret and wish to recover the costs or at least install it to my new wordpress.org blog ;( Do you may be know how I could accomplish it? I wrote an email to Woo Themes and WordPress.com explaining my situation, but I guess it will take a long time before they will get back to me, so if you guys have any advice to me, I would really really appreciate it.

    Alex

  6. will it be possible for me to keep my domain e.g. akarev.com if I will now move to wordpress.org?

Yes. Here are do it yourself instructions for setting up a wordpress.org install and moving your content into it. > http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2010/11/06/setting-up-a-self-hosted-wordpress-org-install/

I am sorry for my poor English, it is not my mother language, however, as far as I understand you were trying to say that WordPress.COM can refund me all the costs e.g. all the purchases that I have made last night? If so, what is the best way for me to get a refund? Should I simply write them an email explaining my situation which I have already done or is there a button or anything else I should know about to retrive my purchases/recover my costs?: )

You gave me a hope which I needed so much :D

    Thanks a lot guys!

  8. Regarding the Premium Theme please see here:

I purchased a premium theme at WordPress.com. Will it be transferred?
Premium themes purchased at WordPress.com are only valid here at WordPress.com. http://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/

That's really bad ;( so I will have to purchase this theme again and as far as I see from Woo Themes website it costs $70 there instead of $45 which I have paid on the WordPress.com. ;(

Anyway, thanks a lot, so as far as I understood I now need to buy everything from the scratch and set up a self-hosted website... so I simply wasted ±$100 for nothing ;(

  11. WordPress.ORG has something over 1,200 FREE themes you can use - so you might save some money there.

  12. 1,392 Themes - my bad

Sweet. Although I totally felt in love with this theme by Woo Themes. It is so minimalistic and has everything that I need a wordpress theme to have. I think i will have to buy it now again directly from their website :(

Anyway, guys thank you very much for all of your help and attention you've given to me, I really appreciate it, and I mean it. I am glad to see that there are still people who are willing to help others

I guess it is a lesson for the future. From now on I will have to read all the documentation with great care before making any purchases

By the way, since it says that it won't be possible to cover up the costs for my domain, I think it is best for me to cancel it now here on wordpress.com and register it again at let's say godaddy.com? What do you think?

  14. DON'T CANCEL THE DOMAIN!!!

It takes a while for the domain to become available again - WordPress.COM is one of the lowest cost registrars around - all you will need to do is change the name-servers to point to your new host and you are ready to go.

If you cancel the domain you will need to wait until the domain becomes back available and sometimes domain squatters grab up domains that are expired or canceled and hold them hostage for lots of money - if you keep the domain here you can have your site up and running TODAY!

If you really want to move the registration you can move it at any point after 60 days (internet regulations)

You be welcome for the help and good luck!
