Words breaking into letters at each line break in comments

  1. Just noticed this so maybe it's a temporary glitch, but how can I make sure that the words don't break up into letters at each line break in the comments section? It's not happening in every comment, but it's happening in a lot of them - especially in the replies to comments. (Things like It's turning into I
    t's).

    Thank you,
    Sheila

The blog I need help with is sheilahurst.wordpress.com.

  2. Sheila, I use the theme Twenty Eleven as well, and my comments section is doing the same thing. I first noticed it yesterday, but see that comments from past blog posts are affected as well. Hopefully, we'll get an answer soon.

  3. Flagged for Staff attention.

  4. @sheilahurst
I'm using Firefox 17 and I don't see what you describe on the comments on your latest post at all. Please post a link to an example.

If you are not running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com/ please try upgrading or switching first.

If you are, please do these:
    1. Try clearing your browser’s cache http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=32050

Note: If you are using an IE9 browser in compatibility mode that makes it render as IE7 and IE7 is not supported. To disable see > http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1196-internet-explorer-compatibility-view-turn-off.html

    2. Make sure that you have third-party cookies enabled: http://en.support.wordpress.com/third-party-cookies/

    3. Try with all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily disabled.

    4. Try enabling HTTPS: http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/

If it’s still happening, let us know which browser (and version of it) you’re using and post any error reports you get.

It can be seen in several of my responses, but if you look at my response to Paula Acton, it happens on most lines. The "r" drops off, "wrote" is broken, "to" is broken.

  7. Aha! Thanks for that link. Now I see what you mean.

  8. It seemed to start yesterday, and I see older comments are affected where the weren't before. I'm using Firefox 17.

  9. Staff have been upgrading the software here and issues are cropping up. This may be related to that upgrading or not. Either way this thread has been tagged for their attention.

  10. Thank you. I'm patient and will wait to see what happens.

  11. For a little additional information ... I just left a comment on another Twenty Eleven themed blog. The blogger responded to me. When I clicked to reply to her response, the box expanded and all of the letters were in their proper place. When the comment posted, and the box retracted, some of the letters fell off onto the next line(s).

  12. Thank you - that's good to know it's not happening in all browsers. I'm using Explorer. I first noticed it on this post:
    http://sheilahurst.wordpress.com/2012/11/28/have-we-progressed-and-is-progress-worth-it/

but it's happening on all of them.

  13. I ended up changing themes so now I'm all set - thank you.

  14. Hey, support guys, I've had my theme from the beginning and don't want to change. ;-) Would like to see the problem fixed.

Here's another Twenty Eleven themed blog where it's happening:
    http://clownonfire.wordpress.com/2012/11/30/michelle-weber/

It might be specific to the theme, and it happens in the replies to the comments.

  15. I'm not seeing the issue myself. Is it still happening for you?

If so, first make sure that your browser is up to date by visiting http://www.whatbrowser.org/

If it is not, please try updating your browser or switching to a different browser.

If it is, please do these three things:

    1. Try clearing your browser's cache and cookies: http://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/

    2. Make sure that you have third-party cookies enabled: http://en.support.wordpress.com/third-party-cookies/

    3. Try with all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily disabled.

Please let us know how each step goes for you, and which browser (and version of) you're using if you're still having trouble.

  16. My browser is updated. The problem is easy to see.

    http://breezybooksblog.wordpress.com/2012/11/26/hes-baaack/#comments
Look at my very first comment to ThatFunnyBlogGuy. The word "have" and "same" are both broken.

Here's a post from A Clown on Fire. He also uses Twenty Eleven.
http://clownonfire.wordpress.com/2012/11/30/michelle-weber/ Look at his very first comment to kayjai. The word "black" is broken.

Here's a post from My Not So Cheeky Thoughts - also using Twenty Eleven. http://mynotsocheekythoughts.wordpress.com/2012/11/25/hello-world/ You can see the broken words in almost all of our comments to each other.

It just started happening within the last two days, it affects older posts/comments, too, and every Twenty Eleven theme I've seen so far seems to be affected.

I don't see the stated problem on either post.

Now, you mentioned your browser is up-to-date, but what about the other three items listed above, and which browser (and version of) are you using?

  18. Ok, I'll clear cache, etc. and report back, but I did run over to have my husband check my blog on his laptop. He brought the current blog post up in Firefox and IE (both current), and the problem is showing in both for him. Timethief also said she could see it.

    I'll be back.

  19. I'm co-administrator of the blog "The Magical World Of Wines From Grocery Outlet" http://grossoutwine.wordpress.com/2012/11/30/2007-georgetown-divide-petit-verdot/ and my compadre and I were just discussing the split word problem earlier today. Here's one example of words being split in one of my comments in reply to a reader. The splits look terrible and make no sense and they've been occurring everyday since yesterday. http://grossoutwine.wordpress.com/2012/11/13/contraste-red-table-wine-mexicoca-4-99/#comment-7759
Sure would love to see this fixed, as it's very distracting and certainly doesn't reflect well on WordPress...or our particular blog.

  20. lim13 ... I see it on your blog, too. You are also using the theme Twenty Eleven.

  21. I'm the other co-admin with Lim13. I'm running Firefox 17.0.1 and have third-party cookies enabled, and the lines in comments are not breaking at words, just filling up all lines with as many characters as they will hold, so that words get split between lines. As an example, see the comments (not the post itself) on
    http://grossoutwine.wordpress.com/2012/11/30/2007-georgetown-divide-petit-verdot/

  22. I cleared my browser cache and still see the same problem.

  23. Ok. Changed theme to Twenty Twelve and the problem is gone. Twenty Eleven had the feature of an easily visible "number of comments" area which I may want to return to.

  24. Ok, still missing some key information here.

Would everyone please try with your browser extensions or add-ons disabled, and tell us which browser (and version of) you're using?

We need information to track this down, so if you're just joining the thread now, the same troubleshooting steps and information requests provided above should apply to you too.

  25. All steps done. I had my husband help with the disabling of extensions and add-ons, and nothing changed. Comments are affected for the life of my blog (six months). I'm running Firefox 17.0.1

I think I first noticed this on the evening of Nov. 28.

  26. Ok, would you please take a screenshot of what you're seeing and upload it via Media -> Add new in your blog's Dashboard so I can take look?

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/

  27. I put a screenshot in my media library: broken_words.jpg http://breezybooksblog.wordpress.com/?attachment_id=1667

The problem can be seen in my comment.

  28. I disabled all add-ons, went briefly back to Twenty Eleven, and put a screen capture in my media library, grossoutwine_screenshot.jpg

    http://grossoutwine.wordpress.com/?attachment_id=6400

It is the comment section of the post link given above.

  29. Hmm... that photo seems too small to be visible. I'll try again.

  30. Argh, this is so strange. I was I could reproduce the issue myself so I could see it.

You're both running Firefox 17, right? I'm unable to reproduce it under Firefox 17 myself, but maybe there's differences in the OS too.

Which version of Windows are you running?
