Working on a FAQ for the forums

  1. Greets:

I'm working on an FAQ for the forum here that I plan on making into a sticky. I already have the adsense quesion, the upload and post pictures FAQ, how to do images in links FAQ, how to *cough* search in these here forums and a couple others. (Can't find my list that I wrote out last night)

Any others you would like to see?

    Thanks,
    -drmike

  2. Adding the feed: tag question.

  3. How to add a sitemeter

    Used on this blog http://leftfield8.wordpress.com/

    Technorati tags

  4. How to add a theme

    how to add plug ins

    How to report a spammer

    where to go for help

how to submit a support question

how to get a domain name for your blog

OK, now I have a blog. Now what?

  5. I think posting pictures, adding links and embedding video should be there as well. And maybe a part about closing the html tags so the sidebar wont mess up?

  6. One blog with multiple authors howto. Seems to be asked a lot. Are you planning on just linking to already opened threads?

  7. Pending format

  8. We can also turn these into posts on the FAQ blog as needed. Or do you think the FAQ blog should be superceded by a FAQ forum? (One question per thread.)

  9. Nah, I'm thinking just a single post at the top of the forum made into a sticky. We seem to have been asked about Adsense three times yesterday if I recall.

Most of these FAQs that we get here are fairly simple questions. If it was server management or something highly detailed where it was mutliple steps, command line stuff, I'd go for a forum.

I'll have a rough draft tomorrow. Been kind of busy today plus I do work with a local group that feeds the homeless three nights a week.

  10. Would you add something about what the sidebar editor is and what it does? I'm not a techie so it makes no sense to me whatsoever.

    We have a sidebar editor?

edit: I don't see one in my setup. You have some options on the theme that you're using labeled Current Theme Options -> Blog Settings -> Sidebar Options. Is that what you're talking about?

  12. Dr.Mike, better post the full thing once, sticky it. Then perhaps open a separate post or ask in that post itself for members to suggest idea...

BTW, Is it possible to sticky that post in the top of WordPress.com/forums so that no member misses it?

  13. Adding the no email to activate blog question.

    http://wordpress.com/forums/topic.php?id=437&replies=11

Chronotron, yes. It will be a sticky. Turns it color as well. The ideas forum has one. It does not show up as a sticky on the forums main page but since the main pages doesn't have a way to post and the visitor has to go to the subforum to do so, they'll see it then.

Mind you, its not to get people to stop asking questions or anything. Just another tool to help them so that they don't have to wait for a reply/ answer.

  14. For newbies, information about Permalinks, Trackbacks would help.

I have a feeling that 99% of the people coming here for blogs already know what they are doing.

I would be happy to include a link to the New to WordPress FAQ though.

    Thanks for the suggestion,
    -drmike

  16. Yes, that should help.

    Thankyou!

  17. I wish we were able to change themes to a wider choice, the ones available are ok if you are male but there's nothing very feminine, well except maybe Banana Smoothie but I don't fancy looking at that everyday, we need something like Iris or Mixed Bouquet.
Also why can't we have Plugins? I would like a Calender. I have used Live Journal and the scope for customization is huge compared to wordpress which is a shame.

  18. Perhaps the FAQ could explain that we're not allowed to edit or add themes or plugins because of the possibility that a fellow user could execute malicious code? If it were pointed out that the capacity to edit themes could lead to your blog being hacked, people might not be so desperate for it to happen ;)

  19. A good idea might be to have, at the top of the faq, a matrix showing what features are or are not available. This could possibly serve as the table of contents -- if a feature is available, it would have a "yes" with a hyperlink to the howto for that feature. This would provide a really easy way for new users to scan quickly and find out why they can't tweak their templates or have adsense or all of that other stuff that clogs up the forums.

  20. Me again; this just occurred to me when I was answering a question. Would it be technically possible and/or a huge pain to split the FAQ up into separate posts in the same thread? That way we could send people direct to the relevant answer rather than making them read through the whole thing.

(Actually, now I think of it, <a id>s within the one post might be a better solution, assuming they didn't get stripped.)

  21. How to search this forum?

  22. How to search this forum?

/me bands head against the desk in front of him.

I politely suggest reading the FAQ first. That question is in there. Third on down from the top. :)

  23. Hasn't helped. :(

Anyone else like my cut and paste that I'm using now? :)

Anyway, any more suggestions for FAQs?

    -drmike

  24. Hey Dr. Mike

Could the wordpress.com FAQ address the questions of putting audio (I don't know which if any formats are supported by WP.com) & video (YouTube & Google Video) links into blog posts?

Me also bangs head on wall. It ain't that easy to find the search form.

Indeed, the only way seems to be to bookmark it from the thrird questions down in the FAQ.

IMHO should not NEED to be in FAQ: should be possible to find ...

BTW what is a 'backtick' for code: apparently is not the standard backslash.

  26. backtick... first key in the upper left corner of your keyboard under the "esc"" key.

  27. My sidebar went to the bottom. I don’t think I have any images or long links there. Any ideas?

HTML errors. most often there are some <TAGS> not closed somewhere in your posts.

details in the following article on my blog.

  28. Is it possible to easily transfer the posts from {MSN Spaces|Blogsome.com|another WordPress.com} blog to my WordPress.com blog?

Yes, not that easy, but quite possible with RSS2MT

    more walk through

  29. Tag vs. Categories and the ever so coveted tag cloud.

  30. Uh, the forum search box is at the top of the page, next to the large SEARCH THIS FORUM button. If you can't find it there, it's unlikely you will be able to find it in the FAQ.
