WP folders?

  1. I'm new to WordPress and have been browsing around looking at different themes from 3rd party websites, as well as different plug-ins I can use. They all tell me I need to upload certain files to different folders/directories.

Super beginner question...where are these folders? I'm thinking I need to host my own site to be able to customize it more and use these different themes/plug-ins?

    Please advise, thanks!

The blog I need help with is joylaurenephotography.wordpress.com.

  2. We cannot add themes at wordpress.COM. We are limited to the 145+ (and growing) themes found in the dashboard under appearance > themes. Themes found on the internet are for self-hosted wordpress blogs using the software from wordpress.ORG.

Sorry, plugins are not allowed at wordpress.COM for security reasons. Plugins are for self-hosted wordpress sites using the software from wordpress.ORG.

The difference between wordpress.com and wordpress.org.

  3. So just to clarify, I'll have to host my own site to use these? What are the best / cheaper hosting sites out there? I currently have my domain w NameCheap, should I just host from them as well?

  4. There are many hosts - WordPress does have some hosts they recommend: http://get.wp.com/hosting/

WordPress.ORG has a list of questions to ask any new host: http://wordpress.org/support/

Sorry don't have the exact link to the requirements to run a WordPress.ORG install

  5. Thanks for the quick replies and the help! :)

  6. One more question:

If I'm hosting my own site, do I still need to purchase the mapping on WP to get my wordpress onto my own host/domain?

I wouldn't have to right? Because all my files/posts/etc will be uploaded via FTP?

  7. The links to the posts that you have in your WordPress.com blog now which have been indexed by search engines already appear in the SERPs (search engine page results). If you do not purchase domain mapping and move the blog content the result will be that every time those links are clicked those clicking them will experience a 404 (page not found) error message. If you purchase domain mapping anyone clicking those links to the .wordpress.com blog URLs will be seamlessly transferred to the same posts under their new domain URLs. Google clears their cache every 3 - 6 months or so. Therefore if you do not purchase domain mapping your will have two sets of links to indexed posts for 3 - 6 months time. One set will produce a 404. The other will connect to the posts you moved into the WordPress.org install on your new domain.
