You CAN insert a Flickr slideshow!

    Am I way off the back, or is this new? I'm not sure what's changed - I thought Flickr slideshows weren't supported. Maybe something to do with Flickr's recent redesign?

    Here's what I did: I used Flickr's 'blog this' feature to insert a photo into a post. Knowing the slideshow wouldn't work, I then grabbed the URL for the slideshow (NOT the embed code) and pasted that into the post. I hoped the link to the slideshow would appear - instead the slideshow works!

    Looks like video was enabled in January:

    Flickr slideshows have never worked with WordPress, so far as I know - searching the forum only brings up frustrated people wondering why. And nothing in the official documentation says it will work either. I don't know why, but I'm glad it does now!

    I know. What I meant to say is, you're the first to discover this. It's definitely going to make people happy.

    Staff often enable features and sometime later or maybe never announce them.

    Has anyone tried to use a slideshow from slide.com? It will not work for me.

    My first internet 'win', I guess. It's certainly slick, I tried a different theme and the slideshow resized automatically.

    @trailsforme This is great that it worked for you. I tried this in a post just now, and got excited because a big black box appeared, but it never ultimately played. (The post in question, before someone jumps on me for not linking a WrodPress.com blog, is http://plummershollow.wordpress.com/2010/05/10/a-walk-up-plummers-hollow/ .) Perhaps this has to do with the browser I'm in (Firefox)? I dunno. Enticing development, though.

    I suspect this has to do with changes in WordPress rather than changes specifically authorized in WordPress.com. Since 2.9, those of us on independently hosted sites have been able to embed videos from major providers like YouTube and Vimeo simply putting in the URL on a line by itself, separated by a space from another line. I tried this just now on a draft post at the above-linked WordPress.com blog with a Vimeo video -- no shortcode, just the URL -- and it played. I then substituted a YouTube URL (the one you get by clicking the "share" button) and that appeared as well. (Sorry if this has already been pointed out elsewhere in the forums. I'm not around much.)

    Note that Flickr is among those listed. (I'm sure Googling "oEmbed" will turn up pleny more for those interested in the technical aspects of this.)

    Hey sonofbruce - I'm no expert at this stuff, so I can't really advise you, but I have been experimenting a bit. This time I just pasted the URL into a new post right on my dashboard, it really does work:

    @trails4me: Strangely, your slideshow URL works but sonofbruce's doesn't.

    @sonofbruce: You can do it the way I'm suggesting here.

    So how do you embed someone else's Flickr slideshow (ie. I don't have access to the "Blog this" button)?

    What's the code for embedding Flickr slideshows in WordPress.COM?

    I also had the same problem as willcoley. I know enough about HTML to do this, but it seems to be eluding me. If one of you people in the know could post the code and include something like"{slideshow url here}" etc, that would be great.

    I figured it out...

    Using panaghiotisadam's code I gave very simple instructions.

    The URL for your slideshow will look something like this:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/16921252@N03/sets/72157624392250549/show/

    I replaced the numbers you will need from the above URL code with a key. These key words will be associated with the URL numbers. You will use these numbers to replace the the key words panaghiotisadam's code below.

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/SET1@SETNUMBER/sets/SET2/show/

    SET1: 16921252
    SETNUMBER: N03
    SET2: 72157624392250549

    [gigya src="http://www.flickr.com/apps/slideshow/show.swf?v=SET1" width="NUMBER HERE" flashvars="offsite=true&lang=en-us&page_show_url=/photos/SET1%40SETNUMBER/sets/SET2/show/&page_show_back_url=/photos/SET1%40SETNUMBER/sets/SET2/&set_id= SET2&jump_to=" allowFullScreen="true" ]

    So, the code using my numbers is this.

    QUESTION! I did this and it worked wonderfully, however any portrait photos come out blurry, but the landscape ones look crisp and clear. Anyone else have this problem?

    on my blog the view area is kind of tall and skinny--- any way to make it take up more space? I know the viewers can hit full screen, but I have a good amount of room on the page for them to just view it there...

    thanks SO much for the code. spent a ton of time making a nice flickr show for my old blogger blog and was so sad it almost didn't work on here!

    The theme on the blog linked to your username is PressRow. The only way we can alter any wordpress.com theme is through purchasing a CSS upgrade and editing the CSS stylesheet, however, as we don't know exactly what you mean we cannot say that CSS editing will achieve what you want. Will you please expand on what you mean by

    In the event that you do wish to explore the CSS editing option, if you have CSS editing experience, you can get the paid custom CSS upgrade and renew it annually. It will allow you to stylize the appearance of themes you find here > Appearance > Themes, but it does not allow you to change the functionality, by editing the underlying template. Also note that CSS is theme specific, so you cannot use the CSS stylesheets from other themes with the themes here at wordpress.COM.

    Since there is no official Staff support for the CSS upgrade, and precious little Volunteer support, I recommend that you don’t buy the upgrade unless you have at least moderate understanding of HTML and CSS because you must be prepared to do the work on your own. If you are considering purchasing the upgrade, you can go to Appearance > Edit CSS. There wordpress has provided a preview function where you can try before you buy.

    Try to increase the number in the "width" attribute of the code and your slide show should be wider.
