I am experiencing this problem, too:
I'm unable to leave comments on my own blog (yikes!) without being logged in (error message: You must be logged in to comment with that email address.), and some of my readers are blocked, as well.
I have my comments set as open to anyone (i.e. don't need to leave an email address).

Have you selected the option ''Users must be registered and logged in to comment'' from Discussion Setting.

I'm experiencing the same problem as well. I didn't select 'Users must be registered and logged in to comment'. What now?
This same issue started for me last night. Have had a few users not able to comment with the same error coming up.

People (nonWP users) who were able to comment fine yesterday are now unable, being denied. I even unchecked "Comment author must fill out name and e-mail" to see if that would make it better, but it didn't. Boo!
This is getting really frustrating for many of our readers and for me as well as a blog reader and commenter. Please please fix this issue.
I've heard from a few non WP users who are having trouble commenting today. They're getting a message that says they have to log in.
This seems to be a WordPress problem at the moment.
Could we have an answer from the staff?
Our blog is having major problems with this too. It's quite frustrating since we have a month-long writing challenge going on. Any guidance from WordPress would be great since the "Users must be registered and logged in to comment" is already turned off.

We've recently updated our commenting system.
Now if someone tries to comment with an email address attached to a WordPress.com account (or Gravatar account, they're the same), they'll need to sign into WordPress.com before they can comment.
If commenters have forgotten their password they can request a reset:
http://wordpress.com/wp-login.php?action=lostpassword
One commenter in particular who received this message said she deleted her WP.com account 6 months ago. So she can't login.

Then she will have to register "just a username please" here at WordPress.com so she can comment on free hosted WordPress.com blogs.
We're getting that problem too. Annoying!
ANYONE should be able to leave comments easily, and right now, NO ONE can do it except if they have a wordpress account. This is completely against the idea of "blogging," which is a CONVERSATION between the writer and the readers. No one should be blocked (and we should be able to ask for our readers to leave an email address with their comments). I hope this will be fixed really quickly because I am really annoyed!
I have the same problem. Only the subscribers or the persons under wordpress can leave comments... I shall change platform if that continues...
Gravatar accounts are considered like WP accounts apparently, so someone with a mail attached to Gravatar will also have to sign in to WP with Gravatar login and passwords, otherwise, it's not working...

A number of my commenters have worked around it by entering different email addresses which circumvents the problem. Makes a mockery of trying to moderate people via partial or full email addresses but needs must.
Non-WordPress commenters are not being able to leave comments on my blog either. Hopefully this will be fixed soon?!!

If a reader is reporting that they can't post a comment, and don't have a WordPress.com account, please ask them to try entering their email address here:

It's possible that they opened a WordPress.com account in the past, but forgot about it.
Otherwise, please feel free to ask them to contact us directly, and we'll sort it out. :-)
One of my readers who can't comment has never had a WP account and shouldn't have to create one to leave a comment.
So, if I read this right, for anyone to comment, they must use a WP login or make one, if they never had one previously? That seems a little bit ridiculous? Can't they just put their email address in as they always have??
I'm having issues with this as well. so, if the commenter has a gravatar account, but doesn't have a wordpress account, I would have to ask them to create one just to comment on my blog?

One can also post comments on your blog using facebook or twitter account. If one want to show the avatars with comment one can use them. I've seen some comments whose name was linked to gravatar account, showing that they don't have any wordpress account can still post comments.

I have my comments set so that readers do not have to put in an email address at all (i.e. I have de-selected Comment author must fill out name and e-mail.
But these readers I still getting an error message:
"That email address is associated with an existing WordPress.com account, please log in to use it."
I have tried it myself. I just went to another computer than the one I normally used and tried to leave an anonymous comment on my blog. I got the same error message.
The problem is NOT that people are forgetting an email that they may have used on WordPress before.

Is this going to continue, what should I be telling my bloggers?
Our problems have nothing to do with lost or forgotten passwords. All of our bloggers are regular visitors to the site and generally comment several times a day. This only happened today for most of them.
Kinda disappointing that this staff member left out the little detail that gravatar users now have to login to wordpress.com as well (that is, if they want to be able to comment with their gravatars; their gravatar username/password should work on the wp login). This is really the heart of the issue here.
Our blog is heavy with gravatar users, so this problem is serious enough that I'm being forced to post up a dedicated thread with an explanation for our readers.
