Zero to Hero: Day Ten

  1. NOTE: Zero to Hero forum threads will close after five days. If you're just starting out, welcome! Feel free to visit a more recent thread to say hello, ask questions, or seek feedback. Happy blogging!

One-third of the way through! Excellent. Welcome to Day Ten!

We've been checking out your blogs, and it's great to see all the posts, customized themes, and interactions on your sites.

Today, you'll customize your theme a little more by adding two widgets, one text-based and one image-based. Get all the details and resources on the Zero to Hero main page. If you'd also like to publish today, we suggest a shorter-form post of fewer than 3-400 words.

Use this space as a place to ask questions and seek feedback from fellow bloggers, or just to talk about blogging, why you're here, and how your month is going.

Please refrain from posting links to your blog unless you're seeking feedback -- this is a place for discussion. Given the number of participants and length of these threads, we are deleting comments that are simply links to make it easier for participants to have real discussions with one another. Instead, give your posts the "zerotohero" tag to enable other participants to find you.

The Daily Post has a weekly open thread on Sundays called "Community Pool," for peer feedback. If you're looking for general feedback on your blog or feedback unrelated to this challenge, please visit that thread.

Fiddled around with image and text-widgets. It's an interesting experience. Opened my blog in one window (blog window). The widget site in another (widget window). Worked a bit with several widgets and always checked out the effects by refreshing my blog window. If one widget is not along your taste you can delete it in the widget window's right side. Refresh your blog window and it's gone.
It's a wonderful playground. Well in the end I had my blog the way I always wanted but never dared to do.
    Thanks for the lesson.

  4. @themadmuslimah, the widget is specifying an image size that's a little too wide for your sidebar. Specifying a slightly smaller size (200px by 75 px) does the trick!

@luthersjournal, good call on the double-window technique!

  5. Brilliant task today! Nice and quick and easy. I'm thrilled with my new "footer" area - I have a photography themed Theme and it only has one column so no side bar to customise. So I fiddled with my footer, lol!

I hadn't realised my "search" widget had disappeared when I changed themes earlier in this challenge so I have added that back. That's my wordy widget. For my image widget, I have added the Gallery widget. Which I love! I had no idea we could do that at all until @timethief suggested it for my About Me page. I've chosen to leave the About Me as I had it but use the Gallery here in the widgets instead.

So simple and such a good way to give a facelift to your blog as well as adding in functionality for your readers :D

  6. I used the Image Widget for the Zero to Hero badge and also added the Tag Cloud widget. I named the Tag Cloud "Tag! You're It!" :)

  7. You can see my tag cloud and badge here.

  8. Oh hang on - that's weird, my zerotohero badge has disappeared! And when I think about it, it wasn't there before I changed up my footer area. Has it been revoked from the powers that be?

  9. I've been playing with different widgets since I started my blog. One concern I have is I don't want my blog to look so busy that a reader is distracted by "stuff". I've seen a few blogs here that are so busy I clicked out before taking the time to learn what they were about. I've seen other that had a huge amount of "extras" yet still invited me to read the main content. I know it's personal taste, I'm just trying to figure out when enough is enough.

  10. @trenpmcd - I'm of the same thoughts. I have a search box, a follow me one, the gallery then Facebook and twitter widgets and that's it for me. I won't be adding any more especially as my home page is very image based. And I've spent a loooong time getting it looking more minimalistic than busy bee!

  11. Well, I added two new widgets to my blog (me and widgets, that's always a dangerous thing because I guarantee you they change from month to month) and had an idea for a post. Got so overzealous that I hit publish before adding title to the post, lol.

Anyway, I added My Community and Blogs I Follow as my two new widgets. One shows the images and the other one is just a list of some of the blogs I am following.

  12. @Anamelio

Cool! They're looking good! I too added two new widgets 'My recent posts' and 'My top posts'

Also I liked your post on adding other blogs to your follow list...nice!

Although my blog is about a year and a half old this was a really good challenge for me. You inspired me to tidy up my sidebar (for example, I changed the Categories widget from displaying all of my categories to using a drop-down menu) and to re-order the widgets based on what I want to emphasize (social media connections instead of old blog posts).

http://www.lipglossandabackpack.com is looking much tidier today!

  14. @MichelleWeber

I wanted to add some html to a text widget in my sidebar but it doesn't work....I've added and deleted the text widget a couple of times trying it out....I did something like this earlier when I added my CC license and that worked...But this time I can't figure out what's wrong?? Some help please..

Looks great your blog with your new sidebar. And some special resources for background patterns and images.

I've spent lots of time agonizing over my sidebar in the past month. I used to have way too much stuff over there before I saw a post by, I think @TimeThief, about having too much clutter.

I have ordered my sidebar widgets with my most important stuff at the top: my follow button, about me blurb and recent posts.

I would like to hear from my challenge-mates! Please take a look and tell me what you think: SchizoIncognito.com

  17. @pkanwar is your HTML code correct? You didn't omit any opening/closing brackets or something to that effect?

  18. @Anamelio
yup it works...i've been googling the html code and it worked on trial sites...does wordpress not permit <iframe> tag??

  19. @Anamelio
Just checked out the support docus.....<iframe> tag is indeed not permitted! Security issues?! as per the support docus 'CODE'
    Mystery solved....
....should have done this earlier, checked out the support docus I mean. Well that's a good half hour wasted learning about iframe only to realise can't use it here....

  20. Anyone else who needs info on what html tags are permitted on our blogs at WordPress, please checkout http://en.support.wordpress.com/code/

    Done :)
I am looking for a theme that would support my existing theme's features which is 'Shine on', but has a right sidebar instead of a bottom one. Any suggestions?

  22. I added the tagcloud widget. Its just great. Here is my new blogpost http://wp.me/p4bXnt-15

  23. Well, OBM has already undergone a ton of widget rotations. I decided that we would re-add the Freebies one.

Since I couldn't come up with a lot to say; I decided to do a segment on my cooking for your reading pleasure. Bon Appetite.

Hello everyone, I just reorganized my sidebar a few days ago to streamline it, but for today's task I tried adding "blogs I follow" widget. I also experimented with "gravatar" widget. . . . and did a very short post on The Daily Post prompt ("fast-forward"). Looks great! Thanks for the motivational article and forum posts! - Theresa (TJ)

  25. @vegasesundance, very funny! But if it were a cross between a midget and a witch, I'd call it a midch.

Also people, as for a short little post that the Daily Post suggested, I took to writing a chat that happened yesterday--it was between me and Siri; you can check it out here.

  26. What's the difference between the link widget (talked about on the blog roll pages), and the blogs I follow widget? The 'blogs I follow' widget is what I thought the 'blog roll' widget would be i.e. it randomly shows 5 blogs I follow. The blog roll widget is a list to 5 different pages of the wordpress site (which l like very much !! But what of other sites?)

Also, my side bar is now really cluttered. Can I have different widgets on different pages (currently, they seem to be automatically showing on Home page and about page). Id like to move some of my badges to another page.

    Thank you

  27. Happy weekend everyone! Another great challenge even though I've had widgets since day one. I did however, add a "gravatar" widget, a WordPress "Follow Linking Loops" widget and a "Zero to Hero" widget. I be lookin' good!

    @lunacooler
Hmm you're probably right. I bet the inventor's faces are red. Unfortunately nobody consulted us when naming the widget. If they had then we could've cleared this whole thing up and saved them a whole load of embarrassment. Hey check out what else I learned about widgets today as I wrote a small (midget) post about it as requested for Zero to Hero.

  29. @vegasesundance, different blog sites call widgets different things. At Blogger they call widgets gadgets. Are you a new blogger?

  30. @pkanwar, glad you figured out your issue! Please give us a little time to respond, especially on the weekend -- don't worry, we *are* reading, promise!

@cogitoergomom, a blogroll can display any site you want, not just WordPress.com blogs. Feel free to play with it now, or wait for blogroll day to come around in Zero to Hero :)
