Adding an image gallery

  • Hi, I’m just wondering about setting up an image gallery on the blog. What I want is a link in the tabs on top (a page) that opens my gallery, preferrably with folders and so on. It seems like you can’t do this with wordpress.com blogs, I’ve searched for some answers but it seems like you can only add a gallery in a post. I did try to add a page called Gallery and add a few pics there but it looked quite bad (instead of showing one gallery like a folder it showed both images in the gallery and you couldn’t add a heading). Am I doing this wrong or is the only solution to use Flickr?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Yesterday I stumbled onto something but was not ready to try it: there was a ‘gallery” option for pictures where you could bulk select media and then even say how many columns you wanted – all the pictures would be side by side.

Can anyone tell me where that option is, I can’t find it now after 30 minutes of searching! Thanks!

  • Post or page editor > click the “Add an Image” button. If you have already uploaded images to that post or page, you get the Gallery tab next to the “From Computer” etc. tabs. If not, you get the gallery options once you upload some images from your computer.

  • Does anyone know if you can create a gallery from your already existing media library?

  • Nevermind. After reading on, I’ve discovered that the answer is no. However, I did find tips for what I wanted to do (insert more than one gallery in a page) in the FAQ.

  • Hi, the gallery tab has not appeared for me after several tries of opening the “Add an Image,” box, uploading some images, clicking around, etc. Any other tips on how to get this “Gallery” option? It would be really helpful, thanks!

  • Please give us a link your WordPress.COM blog starting with http://

  • Hi, after reading, I still can’t make my images appear at all. Am I not understanding something? Please help. thanks

  • I have a question.. I Did that, but still the gallery tab won’t come out.. what wrong with my media uploader/??!!

  • sorry. about the “??!!”

  • @lykaaahhh-Since the site linked to your username is a blogspot blog, we won’t be able to help you with that. If you are talking about a blog hosted on WordPress.com, then we need the link, starting with http://

  • No “Gallery” tap appears for me either in the uploader. I’ve tried to uploaded several times but it doesn’t appear. Awhile it was there, but of course now that I want to use it, it’s completely gone.

  • the same thing happens to me. im in need of the gallery button since i have like 70 pictures to post and it would look better as a gallery. could you help me? i have a wordpress brog : juliesjuice.wordpress.com.

    thanks

  • Have you uploaded the images? The Gallery button/options should show up after you upload them.

  • well i uploaded them and the button doesnt appear… dont really get why!?

  • If you uploaded them to a particular post or page (not via Media > Add New), then maybe it’s time to report this to staff:

  • After your photos are done uploading, the Gallery Tab doesn’t always appear (it does seem to be buggy). Click “Save Changes” and see if that pushes the image uploader to refresh and the Gallery Tab to appear.

  • The “gallery” function in wordpress is really not intuitive. The user interface and how it works really needs to be re thought and re designed.

The way it is currently working any image you load into your post goes into the gallery. But what if I want to have an image in a post along with a gallery of thumbnails of different images? You can’t do this, nor can you make a gallery from images already in your media library.

In order to do this I have had to load images into the post from flickr for the stand alone images and then load images to wordpress for the gallery portion of the post. Annoying!

  • @nbolton: You can have an individual image plus a gallery in a post, and you can make a gallery from images in the media library. But please paste the exact URL of your blog when asking questions here, or link your nickname to your blog (as explained in the Sticky 8 Things to Know Before Posting). We can’t help without that.

  • I am having a slightly different problem. I just can’t get the gallery to appear in the actual post. I am using the latest version of WordPress (dashboard reports it as 2.8.4). I just tried to create a gallery in a post for the first time. I clicked “new post”, typed in a title and a few words of text, then clicked “save daft”. I got a permalink assigned (http://ximtc.net/blog/archives/206) and then I clicked the little box for “add an image” next to “Insert/Upload”. I browsed to my sample images folder, CTL-clicked several images, and clicked okay. They all seemed to upload fine, and a new tab, “Gallery (15)”, appeared. I clicked this and saw thumbnails and names for all the images. At the bottom I selected “Attachment pages”, “Title”, “Ascending” and “3” for the respective options, and then clicked “Insert Gallery”. A big yellow box appeared in my post window. Finally I clicked Publish and it seemed to be fine.

Now, however, after following the link to view the post, the header and text appear, but no images. Any ideas?
