    I would like to be able to have only people I invite see my blog. It looks like I can only invite people who have WordPress user i.d.’s. Is this the case? Or is there a way to invite grandparents and family who only have email addresses?

    Yes they must have wordpress.com id’s and they can become registered with wordpress using their email addresses after you take the correct steps to add them to your blog.

    I’m not seeing an option for adding users under “Privacy”–i.e. people who can see my blog but are not contributing authors. I only see a way to invite people to become authors.

    OOPS! I’m leaving this for another blogger to answer.

    When you choose the “I would like my blog to be visible only to users I choose” option under Dashboard->Options->Privacy the page should reload and show an entry field where you can put allowed users’ usernames. They must have a wordpress.com username, and that is what you enter there (not their email address or their blog name, should they happen to have one here).

    If you do not see this entry field, try clearing your cache and reloading the page. If that doesn’t work, contact staff by using the Support button in the upper right of your dashboard.

    sorry, I’m not trying to be a pain, but I’m not understanding yet how to get from a to b. All I want is for friends and family to be able to view our blog.

    just go to wordpress.com and sign up for a wordpress.com username. make sure they tick the option of having just a username only and not a blog. (but if they didn’t it’s not a big deal to have an inactive blog.) =)

    ps. i can view your blog by clicking on your username, so it’s not private at the moment and anybody can view it.

    (1) First make the blog private here Options -> Privacy
    Blog visibility:
    ____ I would like my blog to appear in search engines like Google and Sphere, and in public listings around WordPress.com.
    ____I would like to block search engines, but allow normal visitors
    ____ I would like my blog to be visible only to users I choose
    To save click “Update Options”

    (2) Get your parents (readers) to sign up for a wordpress username without a blog. http://wordpress.com/signup/

    (3) Go here -> Users
    User List by Role
    Choose which roles you want to assign to your parents and any other readers
    http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/05/12/what-are-the-different-roles/
    Set the Role of checked users to: ________
    Click Bulk Update

    (3) On the same page find Add User From Community
    and complete the field for email addresses as required
    confirm role
    Click “Add User”

    @lbjool
    Skip the last 2 instructions from Timethief, though (numbers 3 & 3). Instead, go to Dashboard->Options->Privacy and follow my instructions above.
