Altering the Columnist 'columns' with CSS

    Hey guys,

    Unfortunately, I’m a bit of a CSS novice. I understand what it is, and what it does, but I’m not good at implementing it.

    If you head over to – you’ll see that I’m using the Columnist theme. You’ll also see my name (Tom Barron), listed on the right hand side as the Site Title. If you were to click on a Post, you’ll find that similarly to the Site Title, titles are collapsed or ‘stacked’ word by word in that invisible column. Is there a way to widen the column to an extent with CSS?

    The blog I need help with is

    Yes, it’s possible, but I don’t think it’s the best option (if by widening you mean move the main column to the right). If the left column included widgets, it would be fine; but since there’s only a small image and a title, the empty space will become too wide in my opinion. What I would suggest is remove the excessive padding, so that the titles can take up more horizontal space, and decrease the size of the post titles. Try adding this in the CSS editor and see if you like the result:

    #left-col {
        padding-right: 0;
        width: 260px;
    .single-title h1 {
        font-size: 28px;
        line-height: 36px;

    Hi Thomas! Just as a follow-up here, I’d recommend just customizing the left column title to be smaller so that you have more words on a line. I’d try something like:

    .site-title h1,
    .single-title h1 {
    	word-wrap: normal;
        line-height: 1;
        font-size: 36px;

    Hope that helps!
