Am I the only one PO'ed about WP arbitrarily moving my stats to the WP homepage?

  • For those of you who may have not seen the announcement deep within your administrative console it simply says:

“Starting soon, your stats page will be on the WordPress.com homepage only. Check it now (on link button). Now with 100% more country stats.”

Is this a calculated move on the part of WordPress born of the belief, on their part, that the gains for the company are gonna be more than the losses?

I am as calm and collected as a cucumber in an alpine cave. I just wanna know.

Yes, it IS WordPress sandbox and yes the platform is free and all that, but I am at a point where this relationship I have with WordPress needs reassessing because I don’t wanna log in one day to find that different body parts of my blog are in different parts of the WordPress domain. The Poppressed affaire, when it comes to arbitrary action, was strike number one:

This, the figurative decapitation of a huge part of the administrative console is strike number two, right inside the sanctum sanctoram of where all the goodies come from. To say that I am a bit disoriented by the prospect of this change is an understatement. WordPress, the virtual landlord is moving my furniture while I am at work and it looks like I don’t have much of a say in this.

My fury is tempered by the real politik underlying this relationship – the sense of what I, on the other hand, bring to the table. Well, for the record, some of us do write serious content that ranks pretty high on Google web and image page rank; something has potential for more if we feel that we are being treated like valued tenants, if nothing else. We could be woefully deluded. It quite possible that like Bank of America and or Well Fargo, WordPress has made the calculus that some of us are dispensable. I am perfectly fine with that if that is indeed the case.

My name is Darth, but you can call me Moog

P.S. The bundling of the stats by country schtick, smacks too much of a carrot and stick strategy on the part of WordPress. To use another metaphor it smacks too much of bakers use olive oil when they have a piece of dry bread to feed you.

  • OMITTED WORD CORRECTED:

“Well, for the record, some of us do write serious content that ranks pretty high on Google web and image page rank; something THAT has potential for more if we feel that we are being treated like valued tenants, if nothing else.”

  • If you do a forum search, you’ll see there are several HUNDRED other people who’ve posted about this.

  • Darthmooga, you obviously missed the Infinite Scrolling saga. If the stats annoys you, THAT would have sent you into a frenzy!

  • MY APOLOGIES. I SHOULD HAVE PROOF-READ MY RANT BEFORE POSTING. MY BAD. Now here, the new and improved version.

My fury is tempered by the real politik underlying this relationship. But I am very aware of what I bring to the table. There is content, then there is content (remember the adage of the new cyber millenia: “content is king”?) Some of us do write serious content that ranks pretty high on Google web and image page rank; something that has potential for more if we feel that we are being treated like valued tenants, if nothing else. P.S. And oh, by the way, the bundling of the stats-by-country schtick with the enforced move of the stats page, smacks too much of the carrot and stick stratagem on the part of WordPress. To use another metaphor it smacks too much of how bakers use olive oil when feeding you dry pieces of oil. You can already get the historical country-by-country breakdown on if you know how to poke around:

Just enter your blog/webpage in the search window and go to town.

  • @ Raincoaster: I DID a search of the forum and only found one short complaint with one equally short answer. Hence the topical question.

@ TeamOyeniyi: Yes, I have been away for a while. So I am thinking that the “Infinite Scrolling Saga” must have happened during that time.

I have been around WordPress since 2008. While it is still a great “freebie” in a manner of speaking, one has to think twice or thrice now before investing serious new content. That whole Poppressed Ads saga gave me serious pause for the cause. So yes, I AM kinda holding some of my goodies back while weighing my options.

  • Very recent saga – check the top sticky post to start.

Oh my! There is something eerily Facebookish about the DECISION MAKING PROCESS at WordPress. And it’s gotten way too old in a jiffy. How old? Well, for me try three times in a space of 3 years: three times of dealing with the fall-out of well-intentioned (but poorly executed changes) at WordPress. The sequence is almost identical.

Is someone learning from all of this?

    I AM.

  • Just discovered this good thread while pokin’ around. I had totally missed it on first try even after using the appropriate search tags:
