Arranging thumbnails in a grid

How do I arrange my photos in thumbnail size in a grid i.e. top to bottom and sideways. Every time I add photos to a post by selecting thumbnail and none (for alignment) they all line up in a row. That takes up too much room on the post and defeats the purpose of thumbnails.
You could use a Gallery: I think that puts them three across by default. Or you could write a table in HTML and put that in the Code editor.
