A fellow blogger uses the Atahualpa theme which, she tells me, has many functions etc. I thought it looked good but cannot find it in the Themes collection. What now?? Please can someone advise accordingly.
The blog I need help with is the-ridouts.com.
Hi Karen. For now, that theme is only available to self-hosted WordPress.ORG blogs and is not part of the 100+ themes you can choose at WordPress.com. See here for details:
Hi Airodyssey…. thanks for that. Until now (I am a newbie!) I hadn’t realised the difference between WordPress.com and .org. What I wanted to do at some point was to incorporate family history pages via TNG8 or similar. Now I’m wondering if I can do that either! Oh well, I don’t know what I was expecting for $17 a year :-) Many thanks
$ 17– a year gets you a custom domain name registered and mapped to your WordPress.COM site – the $ 17– does not get you custom Themes or ads etc.
All domain mapping amounts to is purchasing a domain name and mapping the root wordpress.com blog to that domain name. All upgrades here are specifically stated and all support documentation entries for them have Importatnt Notes making it clear what the upgrade does not provide for or allow.
Before Upgrading – Important Notes
Same Rules Apply – The Domain Mapping Upgrade does not enable the permission to use advertising, any kind of prohibited code, or upload additional themes or plugins. With the upgrade, your blog will still be hosted here at WordPress.com, which means that you will not have FTP access to your files and you will still be required to abide by our Terms of Service. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/
Thank you for your reply. I gathered from the above I can’t incorporate TNG8 (I don’t even have it!). My $17 remark was meant quite honestly – I didn’t expect all the bells and whistles but I am so new to all this that I hadn’t a clue, really, what it was I had got for my money! What I am guessing though, is that FTP is the means by which one uploads files to a page (?) and I can’t do that. That’s OK. The reason I asked is because a fellow blogger said that the software is great for a genealogy site (she has it) because it’s dynamic – I hadn’t heard of TNG8 but had a look at her pages and thought ‘yes’. But, she pays more for her website so I will be happy with static pages. I am on a steep learning curve so thank you for all your help :-)

Yes that’s correct. There is no FTP access to free hosted wordpress.COM blogs and we cannot upload themes or plugins into them. And TNG8 is wordpress.ORG plugin that can only be used on wordpress.ORG software installs.
You’re welcome. :)
