How can I tell if someone is using two different names when they post comments on my blog? Is their I.P. address posted anywhere along with their comment? Is that the main way to find out if it is the same person? A certain someone is causing trouble and I have a funny feeling it’s the same person using two different names.
Any help or advice would help.
Their IP address is ALWAYS included with their comment. Go to Manage->Comments and you’ll see them all listed.
You have options. What I do is post their IP in every one of their posts. That’s probably against privacy laws, but the Mounties haven’t broken down my door yet. You can also put their usernames in the black box under Settings->Discussion so they can’t post.
Thanks for the reply but upon further review, there are many different people with the same I.P. address, how can this be? Am I looking at the correct numbers? Their comment, e-mail address and then their I.P.
For instance, 126.96.36.199 is listed many times by numerous users.
hoopscoach – please consider linking your blog to your user name as explained in the sticky at the top of the forum. At this point, we don’t even know if you are in the right forum.
You could have the same person using multiple names and emails but posting from the same location. Or, in the case of the IP you listed, they are all using the same service. I used this to look up the IP http://ws.arin.net/whois/ and that one belongs to AOL.
IPs do not indicate unique computers, they only indicate access points to the internet. Most people in the same company in the same building can have the same IP because they all go through one proxy. Everyone at AOL has one IP. This is why I do not recommend using the IP ban; you will kill off many innocent people.
If it’s one person using two different names, you can still take the high road. If either ID crosses the line, delete the comment and put a comment up saying you deleted it. Or just remove the content and put “Edited by hoopscoach. Abuse will not be tolerated. Carry on.” or words to that effect.

Thanks a lot…
