Can I claim a username that is still registered but has no site associated?
-
I am trying to find out if it is possible to obtain a username that is not in use. Not only is it not in use, but there isn’t even a blog associated with the account (yet the username is still unavailable).
When I go to the username blog a message appears: “(theusername).wordpress.com is no longer available. The authors have deleted this site.”
Is there a way to get that username? Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Until quite recently WordPress.com said that deleted addresses could never be used again. Now there seems that there is a slim chance of recycling addresses but it all depends how long ago they were deleted. This support doc says that when two years has elapsed there may be the possibility of re-using some deleted addresses. The problem will be that you won’t know if “theusername).wordpress.com” was deleted weeks or years ago. If that address is really important to you all you can do is regularly try to register it.
