I maintain a website for my college newspaper. We are happy with the wordpress layout and format.
But the time has come for us to expand.
I need to know if it’s possible for us to upgrade to include plugin applications. More specifically, we intend to install a lightbox plugin that would let us implement a small splash screen for upcoming school announcements.
But we need to keep the same domain name. We have our feeds linked all over the place. Like to an iPhone app for example.
So, can we upgrade to include plugins, but keep the domain name the same?

With the upgrade, your blog will still be hosted here at, which means that you will not have FTP access to your files and must still abide by our Terms of Service accordingly.

Wait, you’re not quite getting this.

You do not “upgrade” to You start over there, with hosting that you purchase somewhere. You don’t need to upgrade your blog here with anything, just register a domain name and map it to the new blog.

To keep all your posts, just use the Export option.

Also, take a look at this which explains the process to move over to a self-hosted blog using the software from wordpress.ORG.
