Can I use CSS to turn cropping off thumbnails?

    I don’t like the way that gallery thumbnails are cropped. I want to be able to combine portrait and landscape images and have them both display in full at their correct proportions. An example of what I mean is here.

    It seems to me that I probably just need to turn off the CSS code that crops the images. Is this possible?

    That might be do it for you. If not, can you point me to a page with an actual gallery that you’d want to modify?

    In the Portfolio theme, which is a gorgeous theme btw, the featured images seen on the front page and pages using the Portfolio template are cropped automatically by the PHP code (not CSS), and so you can’t change that part. But if you wanted to display a normal gallery or a rectangular gallery as richardmtl suggested, that would work for any pages where you added a gallery yourself as shown in this link:
