Can Main Nav be the Categories?

My WP.com blog “JosephDarnell.com” (also known as josephdarnell.wordpress.com) has a main nav of the pages I’ve create at the top just below my header image. I also use categories for posts.

I would like the main nav to be the categories and provide links to the pages in a widget on the side column. Is there a way to make categories the top nav? Maybe a work around? Any help would be appreciated.

The blog I need help with is josephdarnell.com.

There is a workaround, but it is not supported by all themes:

Thanks for the help! I use the theme Vigilance, which according to the link you gave, works fine with this work around.

Um, Husdal, the workaround let’s categories appear in the top navigation. How do I hide pages from the top navigation I want listed in a widget in the side column?
