Canape Theme Questions

  1. I am trying to build a restaurant website using the Canape theme. I am experiencing the following challenges, and would greatly appreciate any assistance you might be able to give me. This is my first experience using WordPress.

    1. Home Page - Open Table Widget – I pasted the EMBED code from the Open Table Reservation site as directed. The result does not show up like the widget preview. I tried two different views, the copy code button and manually cut and pasting the code.

    2. Home Page - Footer – Is there a way to put the social media links on the right side of the address/phone number rather than below it?

    3. Is there a way to customize the size of text in different areas of the site instead of just the two settings in the customize fonts (headings and base font)?

    4. Header – Menus Tab - I set up 3 child pages under this tab for Brunch, Lunch, and Dinner. Under Food Menus > Edit Menu Section - I set up the section name and linked it to the appropriate parent menu. Both the lunch and dinner menu have “Introductions” sections. I started adding menu items, but they are all showing up on the brunch, lunch, and dinner pages. I have two sets of “introductions” on each page even though I marked the appropriate lunch or dinner introductions page that the item should be listed on. How can I correct this and build out the three separate menus?

You can view the site and see what I am describing at: https://thepointtest.wordpress.com/

    Many thanks in advance!

  2. Hi there - let me answer your questions in batches.

    1. Home Page - Open Table Widget – I pasted the EMBED code from the Open Table Reservation site as directed. The result does not show up like the widget preview. I tried two different views, the copy code button and manually cut and pasting the code.

The widget code looks good, but the widget itself is being stretched out horizontally, because there are no other widgets in the other two front-page widget areas, so the sole widget is stretching out to fill the entire width of the content area.

There are several things you can do if you don't want it that wide:

1 - Move the OpenTable widget to the Second Front Page widget area and put other widgets in the First and Third Front Page widget areas.

2 - Add custom CSS to narrow the widget area. Custom CSS is available with the Premium or Business plans.

  3. 2. Home Page - Footer – Is there a way to put the social media links on the right side of the address/phone number rather than below it?

Try moving the Text widget with your address from the Second Footer widget area into the First Footer widget area, leaving the Social Media Icons widget in the Second. That should put them side-by-side.

  4. 3. Is there a way to customize the size of text in different areas of the site instead of just the two settings in the customize fonts (headings and base font)?

Targeting specific elements to change their size can be done with custom CSS.

The Menu page template displays all menu items on the same page -- it's not possible to make multiple menus and have them on separate pages.

  6. Thank you for your replies. I am still having problems getting the open table reservation widget to look right. I made the change you recommended and it still doesn't look like the preview at: https://www.opentable.com/widget/reservation/preview?rid=86605&language=en-US&domainId=1&countryCode=US

If the Canape them will not allow me to make three separate menus as the customer wants, I may need to change themes. Is there another theme that will let me provide the three separate menus for them?

    Thanks again!

The food-menu functionality (custom post type) in Canape -- and the other themes that support it -- doesn't offer the ability to add different food items to different pages. If you need multiple food menus, you might want to use regular pages instead of the food menu custom post type, or perhaps try the portfolio feature instead.

I made the change you recommended and it still doesn't look like the preview

Thanks for the heads-up - I'm going to put in a bug report for the font size so we can get it fixed up. I'll keep you posted here.

  8. Actually, I just noticed that the reason the text is too large on the OpenTable widget is that you've selected "Huge" as the Headings option in your Customizer's Fonts panel. If you choose "Normal" the font size should look more reasonable. I'll still have our developers look at this to see if we can make any adjustments there, but that should fix it in the meantime.

  9. I changed the font size to normal, but it still does not look like the sample shows. (It also makes the font on the rest of the site smaller, which is not what I was hoping to have).

Do you know if there is a plugin or another theme that will allow me to have 3 separate menu pages for this restaurant?

WordPress.com's version of the OpenTable widget is styled a bit differently than the one you see on their site, so they won't look quite the same.

In terms of the font size, I've reported the size issue to our developers and I'll keep you posted here.

No, as I mentioned earlier, the food-menu functionality on WordPress.com doesn't allow separate menu pages, so that's not something you'll find here, in any theme. Our menu functionality allows for a single menu page.

You could perhaps try using regular pages instead, or the portfolio functionality, as I mentioned earlier.

Third-party plugins are something you could look into if you decide to switch over to a self-hosted site.

You can learn here about the differences between WordPress.com and self-hosted (WordPress.org) sites:

  11. Hi there!

I just wanted to let you know that we fixed the issue with Open Table widget title not sizing correctly, so you can go ahead and use "Large" or "Huge" as the Headings option in your Customizer's Fonts panel.

As for one of the issues reported earlier:

The widget code looks good, but the widget itself is being stretched out horizontally, because there are no other widgets in the other two front-page widget areas, so the sole widget is stretching out to fill the entire width of the content area.

This issue has been fixed now as well, and the Open Table widget should not be stretched out, even if other Front Page widget areas are empty.

Thank you for your patience! If there's anything else you need help with, please let us know!
