Cannot buy Domain Upgrade for subdomain

I’m trying to purchase a domain upgrade, but I only want to map a subdomain “www.acme.com” to my WordPress.com blog “acme.wordpress.com”.
I have created a CNAME record for “www.acme.com”, pointing to “acme.wordpress.com”.
When I try to “Add a Domain” on the “Domains” page, I receive the following message:
“Someone (maybe you?) already registered acme.com, but the domain is not pointing to WordPress.com.”
So, it appears that the Domains UI is acting incorrectly.
There is a Support Topic under “Domain Mapping >> Map a Subdomain”, but the Domains page is acting contrary to the support topic (i.e. forcing me to change nameservers even though I’m trying to add a subdomain.
Please help!
The blog I need help with is taurusfoundation.wordpress.com.
