Can't load WordPress homepage (& related tabs)
Starting today, I am unable to load the WordPress homepage. The tabs show up, as do the footers, but the middle is blank. I can’t access any of the tabs, including my Reader or Freshly Pressed. I can view my own blog and go to others’ through comments just fine.
I already went through the steps you present as “the troubleshooting steps we take whenever any issues like this arise”. One thing that may be impacting is that I use Internet Explorer 8. When I went to Bloghappy it said I cannot upgrade to 9 because I have Windows XP.
Did WordPress change supported versions since yesterday? Do you think it is a compatibility issue? Can I have Firefox as well as Explorer on my computer? Excuse my ignorance, but do different applications require different browsers?
I appreciate any help you can give.
The blog I need help with is pegoleg.com.
I am also on windows XPand cannot upgrade to IE9 but I don’t use IE8. Even using compatibility mode in IE8 is not as good as using a reliable browser is. I’m a Firefox user and I’m not experiencing any of these problems. Would you like to try downloading Firefox 13? If so, here’s the link http://browsehappy.com.
P.S. I have flagged this thread for Staff attention.
Thanks for the prompt response, Timethief. I’ve used IE forever so I’m a bit hesitant to drop it. I went to Firefox’ website and couldn’t find any documentation on having more than one browser. Is it even possible or needed? I’m afraid I won’t be able to access sites I now use. For example, I use Outlook Express for email – does that have anything to do with browser?
Yes, you can install as many browsers as you want to.
I highly recommend switching to Firefox, as IE 8 is effectively outdated and doesn’t support all the latest web technology.
Would you please try Firefox?
@ pegoleg – you can continue to use Outlook Express for email, and any browsers you choose. Email is separate.
You can also import your “favorites” (bookmarks? I don’t remember what they are called in IE) to Firefox. There is a learning curve, but it is an easy one. You can do this! (And will be happier, once you get used to it.)
I’m going ahead with the change to Firefox (biting my nails and crossing my fingers…which are 2 things that are hard to do at the same time.)
I hope this takes care of my problem.
Thank you all for the input and encouragement!
I DID download Firefox and I am now able to access the WordPress homepage (and attached pages) again.
I’m still trying to get used to it and I don’t like how the bookmarks are organized, but I’m sure that will take time.
May I suggest that the WP powers-that-be may want to rethink a programming change that makes it impossible for those running IE 8 to access the home page, if that is indeed what happened? I can understand those of us using this hosting platform have to comply with certain requirements, but what about the general viewing/reading public? If they go to what is essentially the front page of your paper and can’t see the content, they will just go away.
Anyhoo, that’s just one blogger’s opinion. Thanks again for the help.
I just submitted this problem to support also. I also don’t have the option of downloading Firefox on at least one of the computers I use.
Neither do I. I have been using Firefox for years as IE browsers are IMO crap compared to Firefox.
Yes, the Reader seems to be broken. That tab at the top doesn’t work, nor does the menu at the top left. The other links work. I have IE 8 and it has always worked until yesterday.
I have no idea what I use but mine stopped working yesterday too. Please help. 1 day is ok but 2 days is really fustrating.
knitnrun, check to see what browser you have. Go to Help at top, then (usually the last line) About…. Does it say Internet Explorer? And when you click on that, what version shows? I’m definitely not a computer person, but I’m curious if this is all related to IE 8.
Ummm I am not a computer person either sorry. I was using Internet Explorer but have just followed your lead and gone to Firefox. WordPress seems to work much better on this! I am guessing that in answer to your question it is yes!
