Can't post a link

  1. Help! I'm trying to insert a link into my blog. I highlight the word, then I click on the link symbol, but I don't get the dialog box letting me put in the URL. It says error on page at the bottom. What am I doing wrong?

The blog I need help with is

  2. I get the same error.

  3. I get a new link box that looks like it has more bells and whistles than the old one. Except that it doesn't work. Nothing I try will get it to actually insert a link. Argh. Time sensitive post.

  4. Same problem here--please help!

  5. I scanned my computer, and found no virus. This is a WordPress problem not computer problem.

  6. What browser and browser version are you using? Staff is working on an issue with IE7/8 - or at least they were last night when I signed off.

  7. Windows Internet Explorer 7
    Version: 7.0.5730.13

  8. I kind of hoped the IE7/8 link issue would have been solved while I slept, but I guess not.

By chance have you tried switching to the HTML tab and using the "link" button there?

Alternately you can write your links by hand with HTML

    <a href="URL">Link text</a>

  9. IE 7

  10. Simply switch to the HTML editor, select the anchor text and insert the link. Doing this means you totally avoid using the "new linking feature" that appears in the Visual Editor.

Alternatively you can attempt to learn how the new linking/search feature >

Ohhhhhh, kay. Just use the HTML interface instead of the visual one, when in the edit post mode. This does skirt around the new link window's problem, but I hope it gets solved soon anyway . . .

  12. One other alternative would be to temporarily install Firefox and use that till the issue is resolved. You could then uninstall it or even keep it around just in case.

  13. Use the HTML editor instead is exactly what I said immediately above your comment.

  14. Is Staff looking into and fixing this issue?

  15. Of course. You will find Staff saying the same thing I said in one of the others threads with "links" in the title. :D

Simply switch to the HTML editor, select the anchor text and insert the link. Doing this means you totally avoid using the "new linking feature" that appears in the Visual Editor.

  16. I am using IE7, don't want to switch to Firefox. Firefox mess up my work on the computer.

  17. I have never experienced Firefox messing up anything on my computer and I run both Firefox 3.6.12 and IE8 browsers. The choice is before you. Either switch to Firefox and use the HTML editor to enter links or wait until things are rectified.

  18. Staff ie: designsimply states above:

The insert link button is not working properly in IE7/8. We're working to fix it.

In the mean time, you can either type the link manually using the html editor or use another browser to get around the problem.

So there you have it. I'm using Firefox 3.6.12 and the HTML editor and having zero problems.

  19. Thanks, Timethief, for the workaround by using HTML.
That does work, although I have to add that I'm using the latest Firefox (and Vista) and the new link box does *not* work for me in Visual.

  20. I think this is a cookies/temp. files problem because the new links have been working all day...

  21. That's good news. It means that all people have to do is log out clear their browser cache and cookies and log-in again.

If that doesn't work for them then they can manually create links using the HTML editor. Every link has the same structure. Here is an example of what to enter into the HTML editor.
<a href="">How to select and use anchor text effectively</a>

This is the end result How to select and use anchor text effectively

  22. The problem with using the html option to create the link is that it doesn't give you the option of opening the link in a new window. I don't want my readers to be taken away from my blog in the middle of a post!

I like the option of sorting through old posts to link to because I do that often; however, I would sacrifice that happily to be able to easily insert a link that takes the reader outside my blog.

  23. Not only can I not link anything but I can't post correctly either. When I type my words type over themselves and then half of them get deleted when I post. Also, I think something is wrong with the Stat Counter. My hits are off the charts but with no idea of where they are coming from. Something is very wrong. Where can you report any of this stuff? It doesn't look like you can send an email to WordPress. grrrrrrrrrr

  24. I had a problem with links with both Explorer and Firefox (having never experienced any problems before) but all is well using Chrome!

  25. See staff's suggestion here regarding Internet Explorer 8:

  26. Hey, Internet Explorer 8 is working ocrrectly. I upgraded to IE 8 last night. IE 7 is a bad browser. I suggest all of you to use IE8 or other browser. Microsoft won't let me install IE 9 on Windows XP.

  27. teachergoesbacktoschool

Thanks for all the tips. I thought it was just me.

  28. *cjwright - I agree with you that not being able to open the link in a new tab/window is a major drawback. If you are linking an image, you can go back in and arrange this in the Advanced Settings, but it's 2 operations which is a pain. But there is no apparent way to do this with linked text.

  29. Yes there is. It is a checkbox under the link title field in the insert link dialog box.

  30. After typing the word, put your blinking thing before it and enter a few times... Then you put it back where you want it.
