Can't update email in personal settings

I have multiple wordpress sites, only a few hosted under this account. This one was formed many years ago under a different email account for a domain I no longer own. I tried to update the email to one I actually can use, but it says that email is already in use (WHERE?! I don’t even know). The email on my notification settings is the one I want to use, but can’t update it in personal settings.

I REALLY need to change the old email as it goes to someone else now, which is not an ideal situation. Any way to do this without having to make up a dummy email account I’ll never use?

The blog I need help with is

You have two separate email address settings at

Blog notifications for the admin (like comment moderation, Likes, new subscriptions, etc) are sent to the email address at Settings -> General in the Dashboard.

Personal notifications (like comments on your post, subscription emails, and upgrade renewals) are sent to the email address at Users -> Personal Settings in the Dashboard.

Try the change here first >!/settings/

There is only one means of recovering an account. You can visit
and click the “Need More Help” link to complete the form for account recovery.

I don’t think I was very clear in that first post. Kinda frustrated juggling so many email and blog accounts, but that’s my fault.

I don’t know which of my wordpress sites was started with my current email address, and I’ve closed a few over the years. I’m backtracking now to see if I can find it.

The email I’m trying to update is under Personal Settings. My Admin email is the one I want to use, and it’s working just fine there.

It sounds like you need Staff assistance. I’ll tag this thread for their attention. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

Thanks, timethief. I’m using your suggestion to backtrack by logging in (sent request for new password to the email I want to use) and found which blog it was. THANK YOU! Trying to get it sorted out now, but haven’t found Personal Settings for some reason.

Feeling dumb right now. I know the Personal Settings page is on there somewhere.

    Oh FFS! Found it.

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction, timethief. I’m still getting the “that email is already in use” reply, but I think that will resolve shortly, no?

    Hi theardentthread,

Each account has to be linked to a unique email address. If you have multiple accounts, each one needs to use a different email.

I can see in your theardentthread account that you requested an email change, but that email address is already being used for a different account so you can’t use it for this one. You have a couple options in this case:

    1. You can create a different, unique email address to use with your theardentthread account and update your email address in your account settings.

    2. You can transfer all of your blogs to the account with the email address you want to use. You can find instructions for transferring your blog to another user or account here: Moving a Blog

Please let me know if you have any questions about that!

I did change the email in my other account yesterday. It’s still “not available” for the account I want to transfer it to. How long will that take to update?

I’m sorry, but our records don’t show an email address change for the other account. Please log in to that account and change the email address from the account settings page here:!/settings/

You will receive an email to at the new email address to confirm the change — please check your spam folder if you don’t see that email in your inbox.

Then, you can log in to this account and change your email address for this one.
