Carousel vs Slideshow

I’ve just signed up for WordPress and I’m trying to decide which feature I should use, ‘carousel’ or ‘slideshow’. They seem very similar in function, but the slideshow seems easier to set up. However, one thing I don’t like about it is that the caption for each image (if there is one) displays on top of the image, and is sometimes hard to read, depending on the colour of the image. Is there some way to display the caption below the image instead of on top of it? The only difference I can see is that the slideshow advances automatically (although the viewer can pause it), whereas the carousel waits for the viewer to click on the buttons to advance or go back.

The blog I need help with is cuartooscurosite.wordpress.com.

And one other question: is there some way to determine the number of images in the slideshow, and the number of the current image? I’d like to display a message something like “Slide n of nn”, so the viewer would know how many more slides were still to be displayed.
