I have IE7 and Firefox 220.127.116.11. I’ve done everything recommended. I have over 600 categories and can see only 10 of them. Clicking on that little circle next to “all categories” just makes the little circle go round and round in both IE and Firefox.
i use firefox, and i get the little circle, but after about a minute, all the categories appear.
I got a “not responding” message after several minutes.
Looks like we’ve got a systematic bug. I just made a new post and the first time I posted it only a few of the cats showed up. When I edited it they were all ticked and they showed up when I hit Publish. If staff haven’t rectified this by Monday I’ll send a message to Support when they reopen. I should have known something would go wrong on the weekend.
And now only ONE category is showing on my post.
i am not 100% sure, but i think what you have to do is to completely ignore the frequently used categories, click on all, and just find all the categories and use them that way. the frequently used category function is only good if you are not using any other categories, i think. makes it rather silly to have them at all, especially without the choice to setting the default to all categories instead of the way it is now.
thanks for all your help and for listening to my bitching, raincoaster.
pdigaudio, i hope that your problem is solved quickly. i’ll keep checking back here to see if there is any news.
I’m hearing in other threads that parts of the themes are vanishing and reappearing. I wonder if this is related.
No worries. You bitch most politely, and you don’t blame me. Which is good, cuz I’m mean.
I think you’ve got to click “All Categories” every time you edit a post or it only remembers the one in the short list. Or did someone already say that?
Yeah that’s been my experience also. It’s annoying, because if you go in just to fix a typo or something and forget to click on “All categories” before saving the changes, then all the categories that are not among the most frequent ones are lost. It would be great if that could be fixed in one way or another…
well, i just tried another tactic. i didn’t use frequently used categories at all. i clicked on all categories, picked out all the ones i wanted (which just so happened to include all the ones that show up as the most frequent), saved it, previewed it, and it seemed to work. then i went back to writing the diary, and i needed to add more categories. i scrolled to the bottom, and lo and behold–only the most frequent were there. i clicked on all categories once again, and all the ones that were not among the most frequent were no longer checked. on preview, only the most frequent were there. it was as though i never clicked on any other ones. i know that i saved it at least twice before i previewed. this is really frustrating.
indonesischblog, i just tried what you suggested. i did a test diary. i clicked on 6 categories, clicking on ‘all categories’ and then saving, and when i published, instead of the 6 categories i picked, only one of them showed up–one that is on the most frequent list.
not sure if i was clear or not. raincoaster, when you click on all categories the second time, you will find that only those on the frequent list show up as being selected. you can pick those on the infrequent list until the cows come home, but they don’t show up unless you publish the diary and then edit to add the categories. at least, that is the only way they are showing up for me.
On my blog, there is no categories list to use. The ‘most used’ link does nothing but scroll the page until the link is at the top of the screen. There is no other link. I’m using explorer 5.5, and I’ve added my blog to trusted sites so that scripts etc work. I used to manage without that.
I’ll manage with posts in uncategorised if I have to. As long as the search function keeps working — that’s what I use to navigate around my blog, anyway. But categories were nice! :)
Tags work, but there is no list — I have to type them in. Never used them before so I don’t know if that’s normal.
Also, the dashboard is a mess — layers on top of one another — I can’t click on whatever is behind the foremost layer. It happened when the software was updated. The categories thing happened later.
Thanks for your time, I know you’re trying to improve the service.
nonnie9999, that is indeed strange. I did a test entry now, and it all turned out fine..
I have added my categories to my last post 8 times. Nothing shows up. The “Parent” drop down is a mystery to me, but it doesn’t matter since it doesn’t work anyhow.
I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who is frustrated…especially by the bad TIMING of WP’s self sabotage.
But it was nice while it lasted! (LOL…And while it was free…)
Between this and the inability to insert graphics of any kind (JPEGs, et al.) except for You Tube videos, WP just made itself worse than Blogger. And that’s saying a lot. Blogger is brutal.
Unless they’re trying to drive us to the pay side of WP by making the free version unworkable.
WP just shot itself in the foot by putting this drech up with so many bugs and problems and a seemingly inability to fix them. Categories worked OK up until a couple days ago, then the rocket scientists that designed this thought it would be really cool if they could make us choose from only our most frequently used categories.
Just bumping the thread.
i have had to resort to using the most frequent categories, publishing the diary, and once it is published, editing it to add the rest of the categories. truly a waste of time.
I’ve posted many times today and I find that when you go to Edit a preexisting post the categories under All Categories are still there; you just have to remember to hit All Categories. It’s an improvement on the situation yesterday, although it’s still not fixed.
As suggested on another thread, I downloaded a 3rd party editor. I’m now using BlogDesk, which is actually easier than what I started with on WordPress. Plus I can write offline and update later.
So the update has worked out well! Thanks! :D
OK, I just popped in here too to wail about this. Glad I looked here and didn’t start a new thread.
WTF is up with WordPress’s propellerheads?! It’s absolutely inexcusable now that I have Most Used Categories as my default. That is NOT what I want. And it is screwing up my posts now because, just as others have reported, I’m having Category check-offs DISAPPEARING when I Publish the fekkin post.
EVERY SINGLE POST yesterday I had to go into post-Publish and fix the damned Categories. This is an annoyance and a waste of time (as is the continued waste of time to have to specify NONE for URL and LARGE for image size everydamntime I want to use an image!).
I didn’t have any troubles after the first two hours of the 2.5 upgrade and I’ve tried to help others with their problems.
But now WP is frikkin *creating* problems for all of us. It must stop! Give us back All Categories as default and *make sure the damned check-offs remain* when Published!
