categories and drop down menus, etc..........

  1. hi there--

    if you look at :
you can see that i have my posting for guangxi province, xingping..... however, if you take a look at the drop down menu in the blog header "guangxi province" has disappeared...
i also notice that if you scroll down the "china" postings from the blog drop down menu, the beijing and shanghai postings are not there.
i have tried to fix these issues looking at forum responses but am afraid i am making a greater mess than when i started...
i would truly appreciate some feedback.
    thank you in advance, --tamar

The blog I need help with is

  2. Volunteers cannot view previews.

Please read this first Post vs. Page

    (1) There is only one page we can post to in any blog.
    (2) The static pages we bloggers create do not automatically update.

Only the dynamic pages like Archives, Categories and Tags created by the software when we publish a post will update automatically update with new posts.

By default the front page of the blog is the Page that displays all posts in your blog. You can create a static front page and have your published posts display on another page but doing that does not change what follows.

Though there is only one dynamic page in a blog for posts (not pages) and we cannot post to more than that one page, we can create the appearance that we have posted to more than one page.

This guide will walk you through how to create category pages for your blog, to display groupings of similar posts on pages other than your front page.

    Create a custom menu
Add dynamic categories and sub-categories pages to it
    Create order and sub-menus (dropdowns)

Here's a link to my post on this

There are many common errors, misunderstandings and misconceptions when creating custom menus and there are some tweaks you can use to improve your custom menu as well.

  3. thanks i'll give this a try a little later on (it's 6:30ish in the morning here in china so i need a little more wake up time for this to concentrate!). i'll let you know how it goes.

  4. the category i have added to my blog posts shows in post/categories and i have hit "apply" but "guangxi province" still does not show up in the navigation from the blog under china.... so i do not get it.... sorry... i've tried a number of things to make it do its thing and i suppose it has been a while that i forget but it seems that all should be okay. i'm really quite lost my dear timethief!
thanks in advance - yet again....

  5. Note the format of dynamic category page links please:

Note the format of static page links please:
    example of parent page link
    example of child page link

  6. dear timethief! -- i love your site and there is so much helpful information -- i would like to subscribe via email but the icon does not seem to work... unless miraculously it recognizes my email address when i click it.
anyway... i am still at a loss... a little dense i guess.

  8. Hi @sbandtg - I see that post in the China category, but note it was published in early July, so it's on the second page of results (Beijing and Shanghai are also on the second page -- note the 'older posts' link at the bottom of the first screen):

I do note that 'Guangxi Province' doesn't appear in your dropdown under China. This is because you are using a Custom Menu and you had not added the new category to it:

To see your menu, choose TGs Travel Blog from the dropdown at the top:

Then, you can add any new categories, drag them into their proper spot, and save your menu again to update. I've added 'Guangxi Province' under China for you.

You can read more about Custom Menus here: Custom Menus

Let me know if you have further questions!

  9. thank you!!! i tried doing this since i knew what to do in theory (and in practice once upon a time) but still could not, somehow, add the new (then missing) Guangxi Province" subcategory. what did you do to add it on the left hand column? i'll re-read the custom menus but if you could cut to the chase it would be greatly appreciated. again thank you! or as they say here in china, xie xie!!

  10. No problem! I added it in Appearance->Menus here:

I expanded the Categories module, selected the new one, added it to the menu and dragged it into place, and then saved the menu again:

  11. thank you. greatly appreciated. --tamar
