  Can anybody tell me a quick way to change the default black background color of the header and the left menubar. Or do you have to change it in the stylesheet (style.css)?

  Yes, the Twenty Fourteen theme comes with several free color palettes on WordPress.com. You can find them in Appearance > Customize > Colors.
