I changed my site name, get 404 message went to settings to change my address and I can’t because the blog already exists. It does. Because it’s mine. What a mess. Help.

The blog I need help with is

What was the site URL before you changed it?
Which URL did you change it to?

    Hi, timethief–
It was I changed it to I made the latter my primary blog, and when I typed in the url, it still says theheartbeatgirl…. So then (what a story), I googled for an answer and found my way to direx on how to change the url to the latter, and when I typed it in, I am told that blog name already exists. Very frustrating. I am trying to create a single site with my name and then satellite pages through .org.

I’ll tag this thread for Staff assistance with sorting this out. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

Thanks. Is there something additional I need to do to subscribe? It says I already am. Have a good holiday.

No there’s nothing additional you need to do. I’m Canadian and this is not my holiday … lol :D but thanks for the well wishes which I send back to you.

Hi there, looking at both sites’ history, I don’t see a record of any address changes on either site. Both sites currently exist and are live as separate sites: (created in 2011) (created 17 days ago)

Now that the two sites exist, you won’t be able to change the name of either one to the other. If you’d like to change the name of to something else, you’ll need to find a new available site name, and carefully follow the instructions here.

Just let me know if you need further help.

Okay. So I have this straight. If I type in, I see a new empty blog that I’m just starting up, Whisked Stepmother, which I wanted to name What I ultimately want to do is have my name (above) as a primary blog then have tabs that link to other blogs with their own addresses. Is this even possible? Or should I create a web page instead that links to each of my separate blogs?

If you’d like to change to, try following our guide to changing a blog address. Be very careful not to discard your old site name during the process if you will want to use the Site Redirect upgrade to send visitors from one address to the other automatically.

You can certainly add links to your other site by adding links to them through a custom menu.

Just let me know if you need further help.

Thank you. You can close this thread. Much appreciated.

Sorry, but I’m still having trouble. If I go through wordpress to my whiskedstepmother blog, the address that shows up through wordpress is But if I type that into a browser, I get no site exists and it’s connected to This is very frustrating.

Hi there, I’m seeing what looks like your site here:

But if I type that into a browser, I get no site exists and it’s connected to

Would it be possible to upload a screenshot of what you’re seeing to help in troubleshooting?

Here’s a guide on how to make a screenshot, if you’re not sure:

You can upload the screenshot in your Media Library so I can see it. Thanks.

    Hi, Kathryn–
Okay… On the link you sent, I can open my page. If I type it into a browser, I can’t. I even copied your link into the browser and can’t get to it. And when I do copy or type it in, I get, on google, the name of my blog (Whisked Stepmother) and below the blog title,, which I don’t want. When I click on that, no page is found. I’ve attached screen shots of all. Ahhhh. And thanks.

ooops. not attached. in my Whisked Stepmother library.

Hi Carla, thanks for the screenshots, they’re helpful.

When you want to load up your new site in the browser, you need to put the address in the browser’s address bar, not into the Google search box. This will bring up your site. Here’s a screenshot:

In terms of the Google search-engine results, it may take a while for Google to find your new site and return it in the search results for various keywords. A few things you can do on your end to speed this up:

    – purchase a Site Redirect upgrade to automatically redirect to
    – change the Site Title of to something other than “Whisked Stepmother” under Settings > General
    – set to Private under Settings > Reading so it will no longer be accessible to search engines (or humans)

Just let me know if you need further help.

Thanks yet again! I am away on biz and will get to this this weekend. I will let you know if I have any further issues. Be well.

Hi kathrynwp, I’m having the same problem. The updated version of WP doesn’t seem to be the same as the video you posted explaining how to change your blog address. Is there an undated video or a new way of doing it?

Hi knathan89 – could you please start a new thread to describe your issue in detail, and add the tag modlook in the Tags area and a Staff member will help you out. Thanks.
