Changing Galleries

    I like the gallery feature, but it seems a bit inflexible. Here’s my problem: I inserted a gallery into a page, but later came across a much better version of one of the pix. So I went into the media library an deleted that pic, then uploaded the better one, with exactly the same filename. Nope. The pic was not on the page when I reloaded. And of course, since I’d uploaded other pix in the interim, the gallery had disappeared from the “Gallery” admin.

    I fudged around it, but does anyone know a way of doing this?

    If not, can I suggest to Support that they consider the following:

    Ability to “create gallery” with a specific gallery name (eg, “Gallery Cars), to which pix could be added or from which they could be deleted. This would be a permanent gallery (unless you wanted to delete it) but changes could be made to it. I’ve no idea how difficult this would be to program, but it would be great if it could be done.

    Hi there, First of all, when you upload a file with the same name as an existing one, wordpress.com automatically renames the new file so that your original file isn’t overwritten. I can’t remember exactly, but I think it has a “-1” appended to the file name.

    If you want to add pictures to an existing Gallery, you have to upload them from the same Post where the Gallery appears in order for it to be included in the Gallery. Gallery’s do have a specific ID number. It’s the ID number of the Post where they appear.

    Since there’s been so many changes with image uploading over the last week, take what I’m saying with grain of salt.

    I don’t see a problem here. Maybe you did it wrong. Or maybe I’m misunderstanding the issue.
    Example: I add two images to a post and insert them as a gallery. I now have two images in the post. I want to upload a better version for one image, so I delete one image from the Media Library. Now the “Gallery Admin” as you call it only has one image and my post shows only one image. Then I go back to the post and add the other image. My Gallery Admin has two images and my post shows two images. That’s how it works for me. Galleries are post attachments and can be changed and edited at any time. Or did I get your wrong?

    Got it. JustJennifer, thanks – I deleted the old pic first and then uploaded the new version with the same name as the old one, so there was no renaming. What I didn’t do (or probably didn’t do – I don’t exactly recall) was upload from the SAME PAGE. wpvstp seems to confirm what you say. I’ll try it. Thanks very much to both of you.

    You’re welcome.

    Galleries are Post or Page specific. That’s what gives them their ID number. :) Let us know how it goes.

    It works. Brilliant. Thanks very much for the help. BTW, where do I find the ID number of a gallery?

    I think Jennifer refers to posts or pages having IDs

    If you have only one Gallery per Post or Page, you don’t need to use Gallery ID number, because again, the Gallery is specific to that Post or Page. If you still need the ID number for some reason, the directions are in that non-official Gallery FAQ I linked to earlier, under the heading “Can I have more than one Gallery in my Post or Page?*” or http://faq.wordpress.com/2008/05/29/how-to-find-page-id-numbers/ in a broader context.

    HTH and Cheers!

    {waving at wpvstp-actually, no. If you look at the bottom of the non-official Gallery FAQ, you’ll see what I’m talking about. :) }
